Willygoat -- I'm really enjoying this book!
By coincidence, the latest issue of the
American Aviation Historical Society Journal (Vo. 35. No. 4, Winter 2008) has an article on the 1936 National Air Races (the year they were held in Los Angeles) with lots of good photos, including sad shots of the destroyed Mr. Mulligan and Roscoe Turner's Wedell-Williams after it crashed. Also a photo of Joe Jacobson pranging Benny Howard's Mike (one of the aircraft featured in
Pylon).
I also came across this video (posted by Bomberguy, who has posted some wonderful 1930s and 1940s aviation video clips on Youtube) of the crash of Gordon Israel's Redhead after he won the Eppley Trophy Race during the 1934 Omaha races.
