Long Island Aviation

I just got an early birthday present from my brother:

Picture History of Aviation on Long Island 1908-1938 by

Authors George C. Dade and Frank Strnad, Published in 1989

Having grown up on the island, I was aware of various aircraft factories there, such as Grumman, Fairchild, and Seversky/Republic. I also knew of many of the fields (Floyd Bennett, Curtis, Roosevelt, and Mitchel) where aviators flew prototypes or attempted world records. Even so, the book has some interesting planes of which I've never heard of. The photographs of both aviators and planes have good detail and should be useful to modellers.

There is also a nice museum there : Cradle of Aviation Museum, Garden City, Long Island, NY

The last aviation companies on Long Island were Grumman ( F-14 ) and Fairchild ( A-10 ). Fairchild also had a short lasting partnership with SAAB on the SF340 turboprop. The jet trainer contender never made it in the competition.

I got a job offer from Grumman back in 1979, but it was clear that Grumman Beth Page was a dying place for aviation.

Like many military aviation companies, most on the east and west coasts were consolidated or killed off ( due to lack of contracts ) .

I agree, the Cradle of Aviation is a nice museum. I was there about 15 years ago after they remodelled it.

I agree about the prices. My brother had shown me his signed copy and when I looked to buy it, I had the same results. Very weird.

As far as the book, there are some pictures of aircraft that I never knew had landed on in the US, much less Long Island. There is a DO-X that my father remembers seeing and hearing fly as a young boy in '31. He said the moise was deafening. Also some pictures of a Burnelli tested by the Army. One plane omitted from the book is the SM.55 which I expected to see. My father got to see the famous squadron that flew across the Atlantic via a school trip in '33.
