i used to one grave of the fireflies and i too cried like a baby pretty well most of the way through...it changed my whole outlook on anime and genuinely felt horrible for the droppings of the a bombs.....surely there had to have been a better way to end the war....

Yes, there was, but the Japanese military hierarchy wouldn't agree to it. The Emperor had to force the military to accept surrender, and even at that there was a group of Army officers who tried to stop the Imperial surrender broadcast. The only way to force the Emperor's hand was by showing him how futile further effusion of blood was to be; ergo the atomic bombs.

I have heard some say and seen it written by supposedly well-informed historians/analysts that we could have just walked away and kept the Japanese isolated so they could not war anymore. That idea is absurd; north Korea is an excellent example of what happens when one leaves the issue unresolved.

Die Brucke(1959) and Der Untergang(2004) are some of my favorites.

I agree! Die Brucke was really good. It really showed the futility of war.

I liked Der Untergang as well.

I'd like to add Letters from Iwo Jima.

"There's another Russian language film that is deeply disturbing and I cannot remember the name. Very well done, the movie actually puts you on edge because of the sound design. I'll have to research to relearn the name."

Is 'Come and see' the one you are referring too? It's about the Nazi occupation of the Ukraine, seen through the eyes of a boy soldier.
Another classic by the same director is The Star, about a Russian Recon team behind enemy lines.
Thanks for starting this one
Bernie

Thank you, Cardist! That is the one. I'll be looking for The Star. The director has achieved cult status over the decades.

Come and See: a rock the boat movie that will set you on edge with its gritty realism and unnerving sound design.

Is this the movie with James Coburn in the lead role? If that's the one I remember, it was a stellar flic!

Kelly's hero's. Great movie, if you take it for what it was. I enjoyed it. I liked "Enemy at the Gates" with Ed Harris also. I kind of liked "Play Dirty" with Caine but it was a bit overly mellow-dramatic.

On the flip side, I hated "a thin Red Line" and didn't care much for "Perl Harbor" either. "Tora Tora Tora!" was so much better then "Perl Harbor".
