Maybe I'm not the biggest Robert Mitchum fan.
Now, had it been Burt Lancaster... or Peck, or Grant, or Clint, or the Duke... lol I didn't think too much of TV in the late 70s thru into the 80s. I really got tired of the low budget made for TV movie and mini series. I think M.A.S.H running eight years longer than the actual war killed it all for me! lol I was done with that show after three! Thats another good movie...I think...MASH...which I liked a lot more than Apocalypse Now. (I know...Korea vs Vietnam, and its not a WW2 film) okay...top marks go to Kelly's Heroes. .... One of my favorite WW2 films: Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence. Ryuichi Sakamoto soundtrack - awesome. Any of you watch MFC Eliminations? The show with all the crazy stunts. The precursor to the show Wipeout? MFC used clips from a Japanese show called Yoshi's Castle. And the host of that show was Takeshi Kitano ...who is also an actor and director. Hes the one that plays the Sargent who actually says "Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence". "useless facts will make you smarter"

The 633 Squadron has come up a few time in this thread.
As a side note to these movies, there is quite a good 1954 radio dramatization of "Dambusters" on the Internet Archive site. It is in the public domain. It deals primarily with the Royal Air Force No. 617 Squadron and the bouncing bomb developed by Barnes Wallis. Very well done and good listening. https://archive.org/details/TheDambu...ustralianRadio

We tend to have a very one sided view of many historical times and events. I've enjoyed some films told from a German wartime point of view.

With all of this recent movie talk going on, I decided to dust off my copy of the 1965 film "Battle of the Bulge" and put it in the DVD player last night.
What was a block buster back in the day is certainly laughable by today's standards. I did enjoy the ultra wide angle cinematic filming however there were way too many inaccuracies in the film to count and that's not even stating the obvious that the German tanks were actually M47 Patton tanks in disguise - painted Grey w/ iron crosses on the turret. I'm not saying the film was horrible but Hollywood has certainly come a long way since then. |

Dust off your copy of "A Bridge too far" instead.

Quite. I own a DVD copy of Spitfire (1942) "The First of the Few", with David Niven and Leslie Howard and was thinking about what an interesting double feature this would make with The Wind Rises!
