The artifical reef thing is pretty common in many places.
You would think in Australia that might be a first option? But I guess you also have to consider the costs of dismantling, transportation, etc. And, as they said, the high Asbestos content in that plane is an issue. (I think it was asbestos, right?)

Unless the RAF has recalimed it, there is a Avro Vulcan at the Castle Air Museam at the former Castle AFB at Atwater CA

Sucks! loved those F-111s, especially the former USAF F-111G/FB-111A versions. I assume these are the ones being buried as they were retired first. The Aussies naturally favor their original F-111Cs purchased new from GD.

I wondered what we were going to do with those and hadn't seen those stories on the news... That clip showed 2 different channels reporting the same story, one said 13 would be kept, the other said 7... hmmm.
Artificial reefs are quite common over here, but apart from the asbestos factor, it's a lot easier to tow a ship out and sink it than it is to transport planes and "throw them over the side". I would have gladly taken a cockpit and set it up as a flight-sim game seat in the garage :( |
