Great thread. I have also wondered about some of the creative, amusing and quirky avatars here.

I’m a bit obsessed with mid-century modern design; illustration, architecture, industrial design, that’s the “MOD”. As for the image, the marketing team for the Mad Men TV series created a web app which allowed fans to create their own avatar in the style of the show’s characters. That cartoon is me holding a drink.

I've long been a fan of the artist Robert Crumb My avatar is one of his many comic book creations and is named "Flakey Foont". The character seemed to be the most apt for yours truly.
