Whether my advanced age leads to wisdom or Alzheimer's, the social effects of the series and spin-offs interest me more than the various ships. Consider language, for example. Well-meaning people hoped that a common tongue would lead to worldwide peace and undertanding, so linguists created Esperanto, Interlingua, and so forth, but none ever caught on. So it's a delicious irony that Klingon -- created in pusuit of filthy lucre -- has more speakers today than all these academic concoctions combined. Trekkies have even conducted weddings in Klingon.

It's culturally significant, too, that not all the spin-offs were official. Galaxy Quest was a very funny parody, yet could never have been imagined without the original series.
