This isn't ready for prime time, but offers some possibilities. From a paper perspective, perhaps self-running paper automatons or moving paper sculpture? Of course, certain materials would need to be coated/embedded into the paper. In a sense, this reminds me of wetting a scrunched-up paper sleeve from a straw.
