Atomic Cannon
OK, so it's plastic....Revell has released a 60th anniversary version of the Renwal atomic cannon kit, and there is an ebay seller offering it at a "reasonable" (by today's standard) price. Revell 1 32 Atomic Cannon 60th Anniversary Edition Renwal SSP 857818 | eBay
I'm now waiting for mine to come in the mail...I've long regretted not buying this kit 'back in the day,' and the few offerings of the original kit I've seen on ebay were way out of my price range. I just wish someone would take up the gauntlet and produce a paper kit.

I'd been planning on getting one of those myself. Couldn't afford it when I was a kid and missed it that short time Revell had it out during their 40th (IIRC) anniversary. Then as you say the prices went insane on it, so going to grab one this time.
Would like one in paper in 1/25-24 scale, wowzer! |

Wowzer is the size of it...in 1/24, it would take up over four feet of shelf space.

It makes you wonder why anyone would ever wish to use such a thing. As a child of the 50s and 60s, the people that were dreaming these things up were borderline nut cases. Unfortunately, there are still nuts with nukes. With that said, I would'nt object to a free paper model of one. Building it would most likely be beyond my current skills but still a fun thought. If memory serves me right, the real cannon is still around some where.

There are, according to wikipedia, 8 surviving guns out of 20 produced. Only a couple still have the prime movers though. The M65s were obsolete when delivered since atomic rounds had been developed for the standard 155mm and 203mm guns.
Even crazier was the Davy Crockett nuclear recoilless rifle - the only weapon where the lethal radius was larger than the max. range of the weapon. Regards, Charlie |

I did not actually think the idea was that nutty.
Modern artillery have nuclear rounds in some cases - and the "super gun" nearly reared its head again in Iraq. Did not happen as there was difficulties in keeping the barrel length straight, among other things!
