Surface area. Since the glue is in the middle, it has top and bottom surface areas. Fluid is not compressible (hydraulics) so it spreads and eventually adsorbs into the paper. The paper swells, it needs room to grow, usually creating longer pieces....

My theory and I'm sticking to it! My proof is all the little miniature fingerprint marks around the glue joints.
