Donald McNarry had always been a great inspiration for me. His work is unsurpassed. (Is that a real English word?)

I actually remember when I was a child seeing some of his models on exhibition at the National Maritime Museum.
One - it may have been the Mayflower - was some small you had to look through a magnifying glass to see the detail. To this day i am mystified as to how he did the rigging so well and to scale in such a size. I wonder where they are there? Anyone know?

Another miniature builder
Quote:
Lloyd McCaffery is a current miniature ship builder who uses the same methods as did the late Mr McNarry. Some of his works are on display at this art gallery web site Lloyd McCaffery. J. Russell Jinishian Gallery, Inc. Some of his micro carvings can be seen here Carving Miniature Figureheads - Wood Carving Magazine - woodworkersinstitute.com; I found a download of a summary of his method for making small sculptures: http://modelshipworldforum.com/resou...%20Bottles.pdf. 30 years ago, Lloyd McCaffery wrote a book which shows some of the methods he used to make 1/192nd fully rigged, plank on frame sailing ship ship models. Affordable copies still occasionally turn up in used book stores. He made a big investment in dental tools. One of the "tricks" he uses is making the rigging out of fine wire, rather than trying to use thread, and making the blocks out of drops of gesso and the dead eyes out of paper disks. I thnk a lot of his techniques would carry over to paper modeling. https://books.google.com/books?id=f6...J4DbgQ6AEIKjAA ================================================== =========== Blog entries by another professional ship modeller SHIP MODEL Miniature - Defining the art - Steamboat Models -The Rare Investment Blog from ArtfixDaily.com Last edited by John Wagenseil; 02-03-2017 at 03:11 PM. |
