i registered without a hitch, the confirmation email did end up in my spam folder, but that was easily moved.

Yep, having trouble setting up a vendor account... followed directions. No luck. :( It seems like the process is that when you apply for a vendor account, you automatically receive an account and a temporary password, yet approval must eventually come for the "vendor" status. Makes sense.
