when two folks wear the same colour outfit out to dinner = co-oren-date
... while I am reluctant to make the jump to Win10 (I have good reasons), I can't believe anyone would still prefer XP over Win 7. The absolute best Windows related move I ever made, was updating to Win 7. While I am by no means a Windows fanatic, Win 7 is an unbelievable improvement in so many ways. And so many are avoiding the change to 10 because Win 7 has worked so well for so long. Miles, good luck with learning Win 10, I'm sure you will enjoy the drastic step forward into the future of today and a world of improvements. You will never look back to that old HP with XP!

Miles - thank you. I asked as Windows 10 caters now for people who are colour blind.
It really is good and streets ahead of the older versions in terms of utilities, ease of use and features. Just approach it with an open mind, use it correctly and you will be able to use it quickly - and will not look back. There are a number of basic tips that can help sometimes - do you want me to start posting them for you?

I too was very fond of XP and wanted to hang on to it, but when I spent a week house-sitting for my son, his PC was on Win7 so I had to learn to use it. When he said he could update mine to 7pro for free I went for it. I liked it a lot, but within a month MS started offering 10 for free, so I thought why not make the jump now before I get dug into 7. So I've been on 10pro almost from its first release, and I've gone with every update as soon as released.
OK, I guess I must be lucky, as I've never had a problem with any of the (many, many) updates so far, but I'm led to believe that most of the update problems occur with the 'Home' version. Even more so if some updates are skipped. However, having upgraded from Win7pro, my free upgrade to 10 was automatic to 10pro. I am reliably informed that it IS still possible to upgrade from 7 to 10 for free if you're 'In the know', but I'm not about to divulge how in this thread. It may not work for Dave though as a commercial subscriber. Many years ago, my BIG hangup was with GEOS on the CBM computers. I stayed with that for way too long and didn't upgrade to PC and Windows until win98 was in vogue, Wow ... was that an eyewatering leap into the modern world or what?

Personally, I've got some issues with older software that just won't work properly with Win10...software that barely works with Win7! lol
but many people consider W10 to be too invasive and too controlling. Microsoft trying very hard to control what software you use, as well as what news and advertising they want you to see. Personally, I don't want to be constantly reporting to MS and have them know so much about my computer usage ...I also don't want advertising delivered directly to my computer through my OS. Its bad enough in my browser and email, but now you want to put it directly on my desktop? yes, yes, I am aware that with a lot of work, I can remove some of the MS bloatware programs, turn off much of the MS reporting and direct connections, and adjust the overall look of Win10 to resembly Win7 ...but thats a lot of work I shouldn't have to do. I'm also not thrilled with the requirement of an internet connection to make things work. Or the need to use "cloud" based programs. Win7 support has ended...yes, its true...but that doesn't mean Win7 suddenly stops functioning. It just means nobody bothers to stitch up any newly discovered holes in the operating system. If your Win7 system is patched with all the necessary updates and security fixes to date, it should function normally. There isn't much more that can be fixed other than online security problems. And since Win10 is now the most widely used and targeted operating system (by hackers and other threats), there may not even be a need for any more security updates in Win7. If you've got reliable online and malware security installed, you are covered, even with an outdated OS. Unfortunately I will eventually be forced to upgrade from Win7... if only to keep up with online gaming services. Much of the new gaming software is designed only for the W10 environment.

Have you ever considered Linux Dave? Just a suggestion like. I've not ventured into it myself.

I've used Ubuntu...its a Linux alternative for those who don't want Windows,
but as I said, many software, games and online services are Windows based. So depending on your needs, you may be locked into using Windows.
