Cricut: Imagine paying to access what you bought.

This is a good way to torpedo your chances of new customers ever buying your product.

Cricut is limiting the use of its crafting machines with a monthly subscription - The Verge
design-space-upload-limit

I know a lot of people don't use this tool but since it is related to the hobby in some way it is kind of sad.

Shocking - and I say this after reading the web page release and seeing that they are also forcing it upon existing users.

And $118.00 a year!

Good luck to them - another company makes a fatal mistake - watch their market share dwindle/

They just did Silhouette a big favor. Actually, this was a major factor in my decision to buy a Cameo. Well, the fact that the software had to be connected to the internet to use, was what it was at the the time. That is always a precursor to subscription software, or worse, ads and spyware. Or both eventually.
I know it's not an option for some, but I would literally rip out the motherboard and replace it with an Arduino or Raspberry Pi based CNC board rather than pay monthly to use hardware I have purchased.

Know of a tutorial?

I'm always looking for my next "why am I doing this again?" project...

Agreed on the whole connect to the internet to use thing. Not a fan.

I have a friend who uses a Cricut for her home T-Shirt business. and she was just complaining about this. She went out and bought a Silhouette just because of it.

I haven't used it for paper modeling, but ShadowCory, I bought the Cameo for the main reason that it didn't require an Internet connection to operate. That's just ridiculous. I bought an upgraded version of Silhouette's own software to access additional features. I don't mind a one-time payment, but I hat the whole "pay forever" system that companies are pushing these days.

In some instances it could be a good thing though. I've thought about signing on with Adobe's subscription plan to get access to the current version of Photoshop. I wish McNeel would offer the same thing with Rhino. That $2500 all at once thing is kinda off-putting.

I understand that Microsoft got far better take up with $10/month for its Office Suite that selling it as a triple figure package. It actually costs the punter more in the long term unless there were buying every new version but it is so much more convenient...

Would be tempted to go down the Rhina path as well if it had an affordable subscription option...
