IPFS and (hopefully) immortal models

I think I've figured out enough of IPFS to try uploading a model and see if it will share.

With Wayne's permission I've repackaged one of his models (Mark B Medium) and put it on IPFS. The URL is:

https://ipfs.io/ipfs/QmPABBt3fyzbXAW..._Cardmodel.pdf

If I could have a volunteer or two to try and download the model (it's 11 Mb in total). If you'd be so kind as to report how it went here.

The documentation says this should work in most modern browsers.

Regards,

Charlie

ps. The benefit of IPFS is that the files become immortal since they are stored as pieces scattered across many machines on the Internet.

Just downloaded it Charlie. Took a few seconds to buffer at the start, but then zipped along nicely. I am in a slow area, but it took about 30 seconds to complete.

Thanks for that, I can see the upload in the IPFS desktop application - seemed to be at 7:53pm my time - that's 10:53am your time.

I think the buffering pause is the IPFS system figuring out where to gather all the pieces from. My original file seems to be in 41 pieces now scattered across many peers.

Regards,

Charlie

All but instant in both Firefox & Seamonkey.

... now if the library on Asimov's Trantor had only known about the immortality bit it would have solved their problems with decaying electronic records ...

Thank you all for your help.

I hadn't realised that IPFS was fast on download. It took a bit of digging in their documentation but it's quite smart under the hood. In effect when you request a file the software figures out where to find the pieces and you get these arriving almost in parallel.

I think my next step is to see if can deliver a multi-component file like an html page with images, etc - the documentation says you can but I haven't figured out how to do that yet.

11Mb in a few seconds implies pretty impressive download rates. It might depend on where the peers are located. Maurice probably got quick download because there are lots of peers in SE Australia and pretty good connectivity.

I did like the Trantor comment - a favourite set of books (Foundation trilogy) when I was much younger. I believe Isaac Asimov had something in common with HG Wells - no woman was safe in his vicinity.

Regards,

Charlie

I forgot to mention that the download was almost instantaneous (maybe a second) here in Carlisle PA both on my PC and my MacAir.
