Further Developments of a Flying LLTV (Lunar Landing Training Vehicle)

Moving this to here because I graduated from the flying paper version to one made of more plastic and wood than paper
Here is a funny little video showing the progression:



In an attempt to make it both light and strong, I'm now working on an all plastic version.

If I can get my stuff together long enough, I'd love to give a lunar lander the same treatment. Make my simple card model design fly, that is.

Thanks, guys. What amazes me is that the $20 helicopter from Walmart flies so well! I was afraid I'd have to jump up to the $50 mark to get a controllable craft.

Indeed very entertaing, informative and fun. Glad to see it especially as I don't remember ever having heard of the LLTV before.

What amazes me is that the $20 helicopter from Walmart flies so well!

I notice that the Wallymart mechanism includes a tail rotor which I suspect largely accounts for the success with Ver 1.1.
So - in fairness to paper and card - have you tried, or are you going to try, that mechanism in a lighter weight derivative of Ver 0.1 ?

Thanks, I did try a larger card model version, but had the same results, it just vibrated around on the desk. I had already started the dowel version so I didn't try the stronger copter guts on the larger card version. I will move on to the plastic version next. I think it will be lighter and stronger than either of these earlier versions at this scale.


The weapon, er, tool is this alligator clip on a bamboo skewer stick. They come 12 to a pack from the Hobby Lobby craft store. I use a block of styrofoam, and just stab them into it to paint things, and also as clamps that can be put just about anywhere. Like in that picture, the foam block is to the right of the image, stabbed into the side.

I'm sure you're on the right path for weight and rigidity.

Meanwhile I have some alligator clips and some bamboo skewers and
will make myself some alligator steaks ... err ... stakes.
