Antonov An-225 destroyed

I've been seeing news today that the An-225 Mariya was destroyed in the Ukraine yesterday. Hopefully the 2nd one survived, and there'll be incentive to finish building it.

I think sadly we may not.

The plane was being serviced at Gostomel (near Kyiv), and with one engine under repair was unable to take off.

The hanger it was in was set alight - see pics below.

Ukroboronprom estimates it will take 5 years and USD $3 billion to rebuild.

--------------------------

You mention a second. I thought it was the only one?

--------------------------

The hanger ablaze. The An-225 was in the bottom hanger.

An 225

Hello,

French press declared in september 2016 that Antonov had contracted with China for the building of a second An 225 (La production du mythique cargo Antonov AN-225 relancee pour la Chine). On the Wikipedia page dedicated for An 225 it is mentionned that a plane is scheduled to be delivered. I haven't found any information about the effective delivery.
Sincerily yours

When the Soviet Union collapsed in the 90s, there was a 2nd AN-225 under construction, as well as a second Lun Class Ekranoplan. Both stopped where they were, and have been sitting in the factory since. I'm not sure what they mean by 5 years and $3 Billion to rebuild, they have one halfway built already. Unless they're going to start from scratch and build a completely new one. They should still have the jigs and tooling.

If I remember correctly, the AN-225 shares a lot of parts with the An-124 with a lengthened fuselage and extended wings (at the roots). So perhaps there is some hope.

Information is still sketchy regarding the fate of this plane. Headline says the plane was destroyed. Then it states there is a plan to rebuild it for $3B USD and take 5 years. So if it is destroyed, then there is nothing to rebuild other than some components.

Other than national pride it is stupid to rebuild a single aircraft for that sum of $$. Better use the money to rebuild Ukraine ( assuming it remains a country ).

My opinion.

There's one in the Downloads section here, under Aviation>Civilian>Jet. Unfortunately its not her last scheme The beautiful Blue and Yellow scheme but the as built Soviet Scheme. I'm working on it myself and will start Documenting the build.
