GP 38-40 Diesel locomotive
I have wrtitten something before on this project, but cannot remember the name of the thread... Must be getting old. And yes, designer Cor van Haasteren and I are beginning to feel our age - which is why we have decided on what may well be our last project.
The success of the Santa Fé F-7 was a great inspiation. Although its successor, the EMD GP38, has nothing of the grace of the F-7, it has of course acquired a similar iconic status - so we decided to have a go at that. This time we had a large amountof drawings and information available - almost too much, and often contradictory. So there are bound to be some details on which the really knowledgeable readers of this thread may disagree - so be it. I asked for suggestions on the choice of the livery, got a few reactions, but never more than one vote. So we went for the Alaska Rail version. Basically, the GP 38 is much simpler to design - which is perhaps why Cor is getting on very well. In fact, the model and layout are finished, most of the coloring has been done - 'just' the numbering of parts and the drawing of instruction sketches remain. You may remember from our thread about the work behind the DC4 how tome consuming that is! I am adding some pictures of a white model test build, and just one page to show the coloring.

That was one reason why we went for the GP locomotive; the trucks were indeed the same as those on the F7. Saving a lot of design time!!

Double checked the size of the pictures, and still they are rejected. What can I be doing wrong?!

Probably the server storage space issue mentioned elsewhere.

Diderick - a couple of minor design points on the model (which looks great, by the way).
1) There should be a door frame on the right side of the front of the cab, not just a window. I can't tell from the images you posted if the same issue applies to the diagonally opposite corner of the cab or not. 2) The handbrake lever (shown on the right side of the nose behind the step) should actually be located slightly further forward (where the box is) I don't recall if the documentation I sent you included a measured diagram of the cab arrangement showing where the handbrake recess and the doors are located or not. If not, let me know, and I'll send it along. I'd attach it to this post, but the system keeps rejecting it (probably due to the server storage space issue). Also - I love the way you and Cor came up with to make the rounded edges along the seams of the nose and hood - that's going to make a big difference in the final appearance. Joshua |
