I need advice related to model contests

Guidelines for Judging Paper Models

Every May, the Wisconsin Maritime Museum at Manitowoc holds a model ship contest and convention. This year, for the first time, the contest will include a category for paper ship models, in two classes, kitbuilt and scratchbuilt.

The organizers have asked me for some guidelines for judging paper ship models. I told them the same criteria apply to paper as to any other media:
• Quality of workmanship
• Level of detail
• Accuracy (dimensions, scale, & details)
• Presentation (mounting, diorama elements, labeling, etc.)

Does anyone have anything to add? All comments are welcome.

Sounds like a good rubric to me.

the judging criteria sounds right. you could look at the euro papermodel conventions and see what they focused on but i think the criteria you mentioned should cover it. you could narrow it down to objective; dimensions build quality detail, then subjective; Graf Spee at the river Plata battle, dodging shells etc. Good luck.

Hi,

The general agenda seems quite sound. The definition of just what is a scratch built model can be very problematic. Designing a model and building a model are two distinct endeavors. Here are two further items for consideration: First, should full hull and waterline models be separate distinctions? They seem to be two distinctly different forms of modeling. Second, should judgment consider the model primarily, leaving out the presentation? It seems that there are two separate items being judged. In a reputable contest many years ago, a kit-bashed Martin PBM Mariner was disqualified from competition for having too much wood in it. In a different case; to use a quote, "There was a not so good u-boat out there, but you would swear it was on a real ocean." Which is more important, the model or the packaging? Hope this is useful.

Regards, rjccjr
