Community-Designed Model Challenge
Hello fellow modelers.
I'm about done with my current project, a contender for this years IPMC challenge, record breaking. (the spit is on pause for a sanity break) For my next project I would like the communities help in coming up with what's next for me. My thought is to have some suggestions thrown out and discussed between us all. Anything from planes, trains, military, cars, motorcycles, construction vehicles, helicopters, ships, fictional vehicles ect. I think that gives a good direction towards the theme I'm looking for. For those who are unfamiliar with my work, I make scratch built functioning aircraft models. With that in mind I hope to see ideas about various components within the model that I could build. Simple examples are opening doors, rotating wheels, or spinning propellers. Advanced components are a welcome challenge and will be pursued to the best of my abilities. If there is a clear favorite, I'll build it. If there are a few top contenders, I'm sure there is a way to do a poll. I'll do my best to build it to the communities desires. I'll hope to get help with the design of the model throughout the entire process, especially the paint scheme. My final note is that since this model wouldn't be possible without the help of all of you, I'd like to donate the finished project to the auction to be held at the 2024 International Paper Modelers Convention. Depending on complexity, scale, and available time 2025 may be an unfortunate possibility. However, people make time for the things they love. The final deadline, when the first cut will take place is Sunday, January 21st. My goal will be to have weekly update posts. I'm looking forward to see what kind of ideas ya'll come up with! |

If you'd like to focus on the outer shape and moving parts, a few aircraft suggestions:

Wright Flyer, with functioning control surfaces. You could make the brothers out of paper or papier mache too.

Here is my "write-in" candidate.
Not likely to win, but it would be challenging. I don't recall ever seeing this one built. |

The V22 would be a unique model for sure. It would have a lot of the components in the wings. Flaps, tilt rotor, rotating blades, folding blades, and rotating wing. The gear and cargo door would be simple enough.. So that would be 7 components that I can think of. I'm not too familiar with the design of the aircraft so it would take some more research.
The Wright flier and the Curtis would be fairly similar in build style in terms of rigging and wings. Both would be fun. More research would have to be done to see how each functions. I know the Wright flier had warping wings for ailerons and control cables for elevator/rudder. |

I am not likely to make suggestions, but this whole thread seems very interesting to me

If you really want a challenge, how about a steam locomotive with working mechanicals.

A train would be cool, Building all the steam components would be super cool. I bet it would look cool while it was moving. I like this idea

I've got an O-Gauge DDA-40X in progress that I'm planning on bringing, and hopefully I can pull off a matching Big Boy.
