It is 0.50 caliber not 50 mm

The M2 is a 0.50 caliber weapon not a 50 mm weapon.
A freakin' 0. freakin' 50 freakin' caliber freakin' weapon.

The confusion probably arises from the practice of European weapons using mm - the Hispano 20mm cannon being a famous example.

Caliber is .01 inch.
So 50 caliber(calibre) is 1/2" (.50")...about 12mm

Approx. 4 caliber = 1mm

So, the GAU-8 Avenger is a 120 caliber hand gun.
Shawinnnnnngggg batter!
