An old green pal, ZIS 5 (3HC 5)ORLIK

Well I don’t know the rules in this forum.
I usually put big pictures, and no much text.
But when a build something, first I study the model and the history.
Short history:
ZIS-5 takes its origin from american Autocar truck. In 1931 AMO (Automobil Moscow Obshchestvo (Enterprise)) was rebuilt and began to produce trucks under mark AMO-2 (looks similar to ZIS-5). AMO-2 substituted the first soviet truck AMO-F15. Soon AMO-2 was improved, and new models AMO-3 and AMO-4 appeared. In 1933 AMO was rebuilt again and renamed into ZIS (Zavod imeni Stalina, Plant of Stalin's name) and in Summer first prototypes appeared and since October 1 of 1933 ZIS start serial production of famous ZIS-5, which together with GAZ-AA became main truck of 1930-50's. In 1934 first export batch of 100 ZiS-5 was shipped to Turkey, and this was the begining of Soviet automobile export history. In 1935 the label on radiator was modified. People who investigated ZIS-5 told that real power of engine was less than proclaimed in official documents and equal to 67-68hp. By June 20 of 1941 Red Army had 104200 ZiS-5 trucks. In the autumn of 1941 the production line was stopped and ZIS was moved to Ulianovsk and to Ural (to Miass, Chelyabinsk region), where since 8 VII 1944 new UralZIS plant began to produce this truck. Ulianovsk plant UASZIS produced ZIS-5 from February 1942 to 1944. Already in April 1942 Moscow ZIS restart to produce these trucks also and continued until 1948. UralZIS fitted the truck radiators with own label and produced them till 1955. Beginning from late 1941 all ZIS-5 trucks have got flat fenders and some wooden parts: doors, seats etc.. Bumpers disappeared forever. In war years right headlight disappeared also. In 1947 - 1948 in parallel with new ZIS-150 Moscow plant made ZIS-50 (ZIS-5 with new engine). In 1955 UralZIS modified ZIS-5. It got new engine and oval form fenders, different from pre-war ones. This new model received index UralZIS-355 or ZIS-355. From 1958 to 1965 UralZIS-355M had already modern type cabin. ZIS-5 served also as base for many special trucks. After GAZ-AA it was 2nd place main truck in Red Army in 1933-1943. But if GAZ-AA went a little onto second roles with intensive growth of Lend Lease trucks shipping in 1943-1944, ZIS-5 remained one of main carriers of war loads. People called it "Tryohtonka" for its 3-ton payload.
SOURCER:Oldtimer gallery. Trucks. ZIS-5

Note : All truck drawings are based on the excellent line-drawings of Mr. N. Polikarpov in the Russian magazine M-Hobby.
The model have 10 pages of pieces , five English instructions , and 5.11€ direct from ORLIK's store .

In a truck building it's more important to align flat and parallel the chassis.

Very good write up and nice beginning to the the build.
I just pity the guy in the last photo - not only he was taken prisoner but they also forced him to work on the Soviet truck :D

And wire articulation.
A perfect micro servant.

And I let for Boris the dirty work:

And this is the history of the first sheet , 204 small pieces:

This is a great design, a great kit, and you do it justice so well. Good to see this one built. I have dreams that, in another lifetime, I would build this as a companion to the Po-2, and another "impossible" aircraft, the Sche-2, by the same author as the ZIS-5, I believe.

I also notice that the Orlik ZIS-5 has appeared in my absolute dream version, namely the tanker. Would be very nice to have, but I restrained myself...

The dome of the transmission block it's done whit the Gil tip of the roles of paper.
And now I'm doing wheels , a lot of wheels.
There's a mystery in this kit , have 8 wheels , I only need 7....but

rookie question

It's this the right subforum to start this theme? or I should start it in "Model Builds"?

I'm a little bit confused

This is the correct forum, and very nice build so far, thanks for sharing
I don't think I'll ever understand how people cut out all the little pieces from a big sheet like that - I end up with hundreds of little scrap pieces as I section the sheet out to work with smaller pieces for the delicate cutting.
