Alan Grayer's 1911 Harley-Davidson Model 7A in 1:7 Scale
Hello to all, I've just finished building Alan Grayer's fantastic 1911 Harley-Davidson Model 7A, and it has been a most enjoyable project.
Because I have had this printed out for a while, it is the original and not the upgraded version. I plan to build the 1910 Model 6 and the upgraded 1911 Model 7 in the near future. Here are some pictures of the finished model: I used the updated instructions which are excellent. The spokes gave me a bit of trouble until I found the right material for me, 12lb, 0.50mm fishing line tinted silver with Sharpies. Thanks Alan for a great set of models that are very enjoyable to build. David

I read your thread on "Maquetas y modelismo en papel" - it was most interesting. I tried to post a comment there, but it wouldn't let me. Maybe the system objected to my appallingly bad Spanish. In response to Daneu's comment about the eye-watering saddle position, I was a bit concerned about this too. However, I have two fairly authoritative pictures: The first is a Harley-Davidson advertisement from 1911, and the second a postcard from 1912 advertising the business of a photographer in central Wisconsin (not far, in US terms, from the H-D factory in Milwaukee). Both show the same worrying saddle angle, so I think we must conclude that men were tough in those days! All best wishes, Alan |

Thanks Alan
Thank you Alan for the kind comments, and I am starting the Model 6 now, printing and such.
I found the tube rolling difficult in the 1:7 version, in 1:14, it has to be a real challenge. Quote:
I used your instructions for the most part in making the wheels, the only difference is I made the thickness of the template outer ring equal to the height of the center of the hub between the spoke rings and as I threaded the rim, I passed the threads all to the same side with the hub on the base board. That effectively centers the rim correctly and it is much easier, at least for me, to tension the "spokes". I'll try to run a thread here as well as the other Forum on the Model 6. Later David P.S. By the way, I lived in northern Wisconsin for 6 years after my parents moved to the US from Canada and until I joined the US Navy (27 years). My wife, of 38 years, who is from Spain and I have live in Southern Spain for 15 years now.
