Serg3t - you are correct - MV CANNA and MV RAASAY are sister ships!
------------------------------------- They were part of the "Small Island" Class of ferries built for Caledonian MacBrayne. In total 8 ships were built, the other 6 being KILBRANNAN, MORVERN, BRUERNISH, RHUM, COLL and EIGG. Their design was as per a World War II landing craft, which meant they were not restricted to using slipways, but could also use sloping beaches if required (which they sometimes did). The vessels had a two-part folding ramp at the front. The open deck took 4-5 cars. There was a small turntable on the deck as well. The wheelhouse was aft, with passenger accommodation underneath. The first two vessels, the MORVERN, and the KILBRANNAN were to be a fraction too short to accommodate 4-5 cars comfortably, so the remaining six vessels when built were lengthened by another 5 feet. The two shorter vessels were then disposed of fairly early. None of the vessels remain in service - the MV RAASAY being the last to be disposed of in January of this year. The vessels served for between 30 to 40 years - so they were well worth the purchase! ----------------------------------- They were used on relatively short trips and so were quite fun to travel on!

Many thanks Kevin! I have read about Island class ferries in the Net
Ships Of CalMac - Island Class but still doubted about similarities of those ships! So the class has 6 similar ships and that means that there may be possibly many recolors. There are some different paint jobs in different time, eg. black or white schemes etc. So thanks again for the information!

RHUM - ShipSpotting.com - Ship Photos and Ship Tracker
White colored MV Rhum, IMO unknown Canna - IMO 7340423 - ShipSpotting.com - Ship Photos and Ship Tracker Canna Bruernish - IMO 7310662 - ShipSpotting.com - Ship Photos and Ship Tracker Bruernish COLL - ShipSpotting.com - Ship Photos and Ship Tracker Coll Raasay and Eigg together Raasay & EIGG - IMO 7340411 - ShipSpotting.com - Ship Photos and Ship Tracker You can notice they are not slightly different so it gaves us only 5 similar ships, not 6... I also noticed that like all CalMac ships they have Gaellian names also! Ships Of CalMac - History of: Bruernish http://www.shipsofcalmac.co.uk/crossing_fl.asp very interesting Articles

Bruernish and Eigg together
Bruernish & EIGG - ShipSpotting.com - Ship Photos and Ship Tracker And I only just noticed that Volkers MV Canna is actually MV Eigg! With 2 floors of deckhouse! But the scription EIGG GLASGOW on the stern is missing... I hope in 2025 Volker will publish MV KILBRANNAN or MV MORVERN with a deck 5 feet shorter than MV Raasay )))

8 ships the same.
Including EIGG - built in 1974, the deck house was raised for better visibility in 1999. Colour schemes could include the earlier CALMAC colours, as well as the new operators after the vessels were sold.

Never saw photos of first two in late CalMac colours. They were scrapped before?
Volker missed 2 round illuminators on each side on both Raasay and Eigg. They are black and the sides are black, never mind... And on Eigg the gaelian name should be Eilean Eige according to the pics, not EILEAN EIGE. Also never mind...

Serg - yes, very observant. I belive when they ordered the longer vessels they already may have made the decision to get rid of the first two. Just a guess of mine though.
They were sold off and the KILBRANNAN remains active today as the MV CLEW BAY Queen. Previously she was named the ARAINN MHOR. MV MORVERN still uses the same name. While still owned by a ferry company, Bere Island Ferries, she is no longer active and is laid up, likely to be scrapped (if this has not already happened).
