1945 Morin pickup truck in 1/24 scale

I have posted previously about trying to find a paper model of a 1950 Ford F1 pickup. To date, there is none to be found.

Looking for a 1950 Ford F1 pickup

However, an alternate was suggested to me by Don. It is a sort of pickup truck circa 1945 that combines features of many trucks during that time period ( big fenders, funky grill, big hood etc...)
The designer Camille Morin was active on this forum years ago, but not for many years now.

There is a posting from her back in 2012 showing a white version of this truck.
1/24 Vintage Pick Up Truck



The version I will be building is a repaint for the United States Army Heritage and Education Center in Pennsylvania where Don is active. Many thanks Don!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As stated in my previous tread, my interest in old pickup trucks goes back to the 1960's and early 1970's when my father owned a 1950 Ford F1 pickup truck for his furniture store. I remember many trips in that truck helping him loading, strapping and hauling furniture. It was a period of fun years.

Here is a picture of my brother and I next to the truck. Light blue with a white cap.



and I have built and collected multiple models in plastic, metal and radio control of that ford.

There are a few things that are a departure from my regular paper model building.

First, I never built a paper model of a truck or a car. This is a first.

Second, I am currently traveling in my RV for a month ( not a vacation ), I don't have access to my tools and set up. So building is done in bursts when I have some downtime to build.

I am using my cell phone for taking pictures and need to transfer them manually to my travel laptop ( that take a bit of time ).

My internet service at the RV park is very slow.


Anyhow, here is my setup for this build.

There appears to be a lot of very complex curves on that kit. I'm sure with your expertise and experience you will do a great job.

I look forward to watching this truck take shape.

I also can't help mentioning my connection with trucks and car-camping.

I spent the summer of 1960 working at a fishing lodge on the Severn River about a hundred miles north of Toronto, Canada, cleaning fish, pumping gas, maintaining boats, doing odd jobs, and driving guests to and from the train station in a Chevrolet estate wagon. The odd jobs included driving a 1950 dark blue Chevy pick up truck and a 1949 International Harvester 1 1/2 ton stake and platform truck with no synchromesh transmission and no brakes (to stop, you downshifted to creeper gear, then got out and put a rock behind one of the wheels). Your pick up project brings back a lot of memories.

And in the 1960s and early 1970s, we made several cross country and coastwise trips as a family, living out of a collapsable tent trailer. Lots of wonderful memories (although I never tried model building while camping).

Yes, there are complicated 3D surfaces and paper is not very conducive to form those. However, I am doing as good as possible without any modifications since it is my first vehicle in paper. My only other experience is building a tank with a rounded turret. I finally got frustrates and filled it all in with plaster and sanded to shape and then painted it over.. However, I will not do this here.

All fun memories looking back at all those years. And all are learning experiences.


As for building on the road, I remember many trips that had nothing to do with models, where I always brought something to do. Even if not building, I would cut the paper parts, mark them and place in small plastic bags for later use.

There are 3 main components to this truck.

1- Frame, it provides the main structural support , has the holes for the wheel axles and will have the cabin/forward section and cargo bed attached to.

2- Cargo bed. The box like structure in the back of the truck for hauling the cargo ( my dad's truck had folding bench chairs in the bed for use when it was only carrying people ( sort of like army style ).

3- Driver, passenger cabin, and attached to the forward section where the engine and front wheels are located.


Then there are miscellaneous parts such as wheels and bumpers


Here is a picture of one of Morin's trucks for reference.



The parts are printed on multiple easy to cut sheets , The attached one page pictorial instruction is OK for most steps, but could use a bit more detail and close up on parts that are more complicated to form or place. I would not consider this an easy model to build , but it is not complicated either. Just needs experience and direction.

The frame is a flat box like structure with internal cross bars for support. The instruction sheet shows cut outs on the bottom for placing those bars, but I dispensed with that and placed the cross bars approximately where needed. This is not a critical placement other than the holes and axle housing locations.

The main thing is keep the structure flat and prevent warping by placing weights as it dries along the frame and a flat surface.
