Charles,

Over the years that I have been competing in model contests they don't commit that it is harder what I usually hear is "Are you nut's??" I think David (dto) can attest to that as well. I do have to admit that it is quite fun to hear them say "THATS Paper!!"

Jim
I'm with you Jim, I hear this with my club and contests regularly. The MT-LB
really pushed the paper models to a new level with my friends, as I let them
see the build progress each meeting, and what can be done. I have a great club,
most accepting of all model genres and materials.

Jim and Ray, you guys are completely correct! I use to get the same quizzical raise of the eyebrows when I bring in something, especially something that one might expect to be plastic. Now, my club regularly expects to see something out of paper. In fact, a couple of the guys have even tried some paper!

What is interesting to me is how attitudes have changed over the decades. When I first joined IPMS waaay back in 1980 (wow!) there was little or no tolerance for modeling mediums outside of plastic. Resin was just becoming "known" and photoetch parts were in the experimental stages. Hell, tolerance for anything outside of airplanes was virtually non-existent, ergo the birth of AMPS, NoName, and other modeling groups.

I was on the EBoard when we changed the rules to include any and all mediums which would allow for the inclusion of wooden models. I believe it was that one rule change that eventually changed mindsets among modelers, especially the airplane guys. I remember one "combined" contest, military and car guys, in which the military (read, airplane) crowd bitterly, and I mean BITTERLY, resented a NASCAR model taking best of show.

I was on the judging team. The best airplane was superb, but the NASCAR auto was "superber." I had never seen such detail in any kind of model. It was a no-brainer to me and I was an airplane guy! The head of the airplane crowd and I had a real feud going on for years.....all over freakin' models. Today, we have "reconciled." It's not quite love, but we don't have to duck in the trenches anymore.
