Just thought I would share something I found. Its an image from Wikipedia that claims to be "destroyed English anti-aircraft guns" from 1918, but its clearly a Canadian Autocar!
I believe only one autocar was lost in action during the German spring offensive of 1918, so this must be it. I have seen similar pictures in the past of this same vehicle, but not this exact picture. Note the soldiers in the background, wearing German headgear. This picture must have been taken by a German photographer, while the offensive was still rolling forward. (the picture was discolored and scratched so I touched it up a bit) |

thanks for this.
yes, I have more photos of this same moment. The vehicle was overrun by Germans. There are at least 3 bodies visible in the photos, I assume its the crew of the Armoured Car. Notable in the images is the fact that the deceased soldiers boots and coats have been removed. You can see the German soldiers are dressed in heavy overcoats, so it must be cold. Makes you realize that the spoils of war are nothing more than a used pair of boots.

Autocar update!
An interesting followup story. I was contacted in 2013 by retired Col. William McDonald of Nova Scotia. He is a member of the WW1 Working Committee for the Halifax Army Museum which is located within the walls of the Halifax Citadel. 2014 marks the anniversary of the start of WW1, and the Museum had planned some important renovations which included a number of new exhibits. One of the intended exhibits, according to Bill McDonald, was "a display highlighting the 1st Canadian Motor Machine Gun Brigade and the use of the first Armoured car". Apparently someone knew about my Autocar paper model and I was contacted in regard to providing a museum model. After numerous lengthy discussions, it was decided that a paper model might not be the best option ...a mixed media model would be a better choice for durability and longevity... but there was also an issue of shipping the model to Nova Scotia. In the end we both agreed that a local Halifax modeller would be the right option, and the Museum asked me to provide a copy of my model (as a blueprint) and I offered to give them copies of all my acquired reference material and artwork. Enough stuff for skilled modeller Arthur Sekula to construct a 1/16 model (and diorama display) of the Autocar Armoured Car. Bill has kept me informed all the way along the project, and just sent me a second set of photos showing the finished model and display in the Museum. From what I understand, Sekula's model was (and looks like it was) designed from my model templates. Unbeknownst to me, my name was added to the display, as a contributing artist...which I am quite honoured to see. I was paid for the original paper model (on CD) and given a Museum shirt, so I did not expect anything else in return. Anyway, the Museum and the WW1 exhibit are reviewed in this recent newspaper article: Exhibit at Halifax Citadel commemorates the Great War | The Chronicle Herald [Check out the last pic!] And here are some of the photos of the Armoured Car Model and its display. I'll be honest, I am not sure the Armoured Cars got that close to the front lines. The vehicles would have had a really tough time in the muddy battlefields. And all photos of the vehicles that I have seen, show them in less battle scarred locations. But the display obviously depicts the awful mess that was the WW1 countryside in France, and it seems a more fitting backdrop for a fighting vehicle from this period.

Good work, Dave.
I also used images of your armored car model during my presentation on "Military History Through Paper Modeling" at the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center last month. It's good to see your other contributions to preserving military history and that your work has been recognized by the Halifax Army Museum. Don |
