P-47 Thunderbolts - Second Generation

I have been thinking of doing a lot of redraw/redesign work on
both the P-47 Thunderbolt, and B-24 Liberator kits.

So, while waiting to get back to my Centurion Tank project,
I have been fiddling around with the P-47 model on my laptop.

Not only will I redraw the model and create some new liveries,
the updated model will hopefully have:
-fully recessed wheel wells
-redesigned wing spars
-newly designed Landing gear
-boxed Tail Gear well
-newly designed Tail Gear
-redesigned engine components
-full cockpit

I've got the Wheel Wells done
...along with the new Wing Spar and Rib arrangement
(to accommodate the recessed wheel wells).

Of course, they will need a test build.

The new Landing gear struts are almost sorted as well,
and I will add a full 3D wheel/tire to replace the original Marek style laminated wheel.

Once I get all the new parts figured out, I'll work on the redraw of the kit.
(The redraw is mainly the creation of a new vector layer artwork, for easier repaints. It also makes it easier to tweak parts.)

Anyone who has an interest...and especially anyone who built one of my
earlier P-47s...is invited to make any suggestions for modifications or fixes.
The first gen of this kit was a modified version of an older Marek kit.
And with some more redesign, I came up with the D, M and N versions
including the "razorback" versions.
I think we worked out any kinks in the kit already, but theres always
room for improvement.

Not sure if I will redo all of the existing kits...
I'll probably just focus on best sellers and some new liveries.
We'll see...one step at a time.

okay, so its been some time since this thread was started
and I have been saying for a very long time, that I need to overhaul and update my P47 template.
And I have finally caught up on enough projects to do that!

First step is to complete the full vector redraw of the P47 template...
and add a few needed items ...like a Cockpit and recessed Landing Gear wells.
This also means creating new Landing Gear, new Tail Gear and Tail Gear bay.

I also want to tweak a few seams and panel lines.
And add a lot of new details.

My second trip to the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum left me with a bunch more closeup reference photos
of the P47 on display there...so I have plenty to improve on rivet and panel details, as well as closeups of many other areas.
[My P47 Flikr album: https://www.flickr.com/photos/659362...7650603690231/]

I am finally printing parts and test building to see if things are going to go together.
You will notice the new wing spar arrangement calls for two fuselage holes instead of one.

As I said, I am tweaking seams and connections, along with panel details and adding rivet textures.
So far, things are going together quite well.
One area that needed a little bit of clean up, is that lower cut in the center fuselage section, that creates the curve under the cockpit.
The two sides never matched very well. You could fix it with cutting, but I thought it was time to make it better.
Once I change the colours, the seam should be a lot less noticeable.

I won't get too carried away with the construction of this "white" test,
but I am connecting the main fuselage elements to check fit and finish
...and I also need something to fit the new Cockpit into!
You can see I have created the cowling over the Instrument panel, and the rear armour deck
...I'll probably add some 3D parts that you can add on top (if you want).

The cockpit "tub" took three builds to get it right, and to figure out an assembly method.
Its easy to design a box that glues inside the fuselage, but you also need to consider "how to get it in there!".
And how to properly support it, and not interfere with the rest of the fuselage assembly.

I think I have it sorted, using a spaced double former near the center of the fuselage.
You can see the additional former in this pic, with its supporting shelf for the cockpit tub.

The Instrument panel is three layers...a supporting layer and the panel itself.
I'll also include a optional top layer, if you want to cut out all the instrument holes (like I did).
In front of the panel, you can see the gun sight which will mount on top after the cockpit tub
and instrument panel have been installed in the fuselage.

I've also started to assemble one of the Main Gear boxes...
and you can see the new tail Wheel box and Gear.

Stay tuned!

This took some patience, but I think its worth the effort
and it turned out quite well.

Unfortunately, I do not own any hole punches!

Turned out very well indeed Dave. Wait a minute. You cut all these circles out freehand?

yup. just my pointy exacto knife.
didn't even use a new blade.
you can see it in the first photos.

and a strong pair of reading glasses.

Took about three to four minutes to cut all the holes.

And I only fudged one spot, when I used a needle to poke
the small hole just below the larger hole in the upper left.
When pulling out the needle, it tore the bottom of the large hole.

Biggest mistake I made was cutting out the panel, and then cutting holes.
I recommend cutting the holes before you excise the panel from the sheet.
It gives you something more substantial to hang on to!

Very nice job Dave. I love the cockpit and wheel wells. (Did you count all of those rivets on the fuselage to make sure that you didn't miss any?)

Great detailed work as always!

I don't have half the number that are on the real thing!!
I was amazed by the number of visible rivets and fasteners.
I'll bet this plane weighs twice as much, once its all riveted together.

Seriously, I followed the basic pattern of fastener rows, thats all.

This is another worthy project, Dave. I enjoyed seeing the construction images and hearing about your techniques.

Nice details!

Need to check out a leather hole punch Dave! Different size holes and they deal with cardstock quick and easy.
