Jan. 15 No. 3
.................. My third release of the Original 16 series is the 1968 Hot Wheels Custom Cougar. The Mattel model is based on the 1967 Mercury Cougar street car and is another Harry Bradley design. The Hot Wheels Cougar diecast model was produced from 1968 to 1970 and retooled in 2018. Originally produced in only two colors (Spectraflame Blue and Spectraflame Orange) with colour keyed interiors, later models were produced in other Spectraflame finishes. Some models also featured a a painted black "vinyl" roof. Like many other of the Redline models, the Custom Cougar featured an opening Engine Hood and detailed engine bay casting. Also like many other models, the car featured side zoomie exhaust tips molded into the bare metal ZAMAC base casting. ZAMAC is an acronym for the Zinc, Aluminum, Magnesium, and Copper alloy which is the metal used for all Hot Wheels diecast toys. The Original 16 cars were almost entirely made of cast metal, with plastic only used for wheels, interiors and windows. More modern Hot Wheels toys feature plastic bases and/or body parts in place of metal castings. As with my other Koolwheelz versions, this Hot Wheels paper model sheet features the companion Custom Cougar Collectors Badge. The scale is just slightly larger than the real thing, but with Koolwheelz styling ...and its a fairly simple build. Once again, a basic assembly diagram is included on the Model Sheet. Look for it in the ShowRodz-Toys-Hot Wheels Original 16 section of Koolwheelz!

Another great looking model. The color is interesting. I don't quite know how to describe it: goldish grey, dark champagne? Whatever it is, I like it.

Gray?
All the colours I used were sampled from photos of original spectraflame hot wheels. This particular model appears to be Green to me. Various shades of green... in an attempt to create the shifting tones of the "candy" like Spectraflame finish. RGB values show me various levels of Green...with varying levels of Red. Thats probably the "gold or champagne" tone you see. Not as much Blue in the mix. Maybe a bit too golden? but thats okay, its Spectra-flame!! lol This is an actual sample section from the body panel.

Michael, I do build models from other designers. I've built dozens.
And this series is about Hot Wheels toys from 1968...lets stick to the topic... its not really about the factory cars that Hot Wheels used in their designs. I have no personal interest in Mercury Cougars, but thanks anyway.

Week 3 - Car #4
This next Koolwheelz model was a worry for me. One of those cars that has lots of angles and curves and is difficult to represent in paper. Even more difficult to represent in very small scale paper! But I think this Stingray turned out okay considering the limits I have set for Koolwheelz models. The Hot Wheels Custom Corvette was, and still is, a fan favorite. Originally produced for only two years, the Corvette body has been retooled more than once and is still in production today. The unverified story goes: designer Harry Bradley, who also worked for General Motors, had copies of the original GM Stingray blueprints and used them as the basis for his Hot Wheels model design. Making this model a bit more accurate to the original car. Once again, the Hot Wheels car came in a full range of Spectraflame colours with varying interior colours. And it featured those oversized redline tires and wheels. The original Custom Corvette also had an opening Hood and detailed engine bay. As always, the 1968 Hot Wheels were packaged with a metal "Collectors Button" created for each specific car... and so does the Custom Corvette Koolwheelz sheet! ...well a paper version anyway. A basic assembly diagram is once again included on the Model Sheet.
