I did some more searching (based on the forum suggestions) and found a few P47 and WASP engine Manuals available online.
Still looking for the Parts and Repair Manual for the R-2800-21.
Since it has to be specific to that version of the motor.

.......................

Moving on, with the Crankcase, the next steps are adding more layers to build up the cylinder areas.
Basically just a few wraps (four in all, I think?).

Its gonna require a lot of hole cutting, but the size is making it fairly easy.
The openings are large enough not to be difficult, but small enough that they go quickly.
I just hand cut with my Xacto knife.

The hardest thing so far is keeping the strips aligned properly...
they have to align with the edges and all the cut-outs must align.

They also have to be the right length to completely wrap the previous layers without being too short or too long...
this will take a little trial and error until I find the best lengths, then I'll adjust the parts accordingly.
I can't just lengthen (or shorten) the wraps because it shifts the holes out of place.
You have to adjust things separately once you've got a length adjustment in mind.

Settling on four layers for the cylinder area wraps, its important that the holes for the cylinders are accurately sized and aligned.
The central tubes of each cylinder must fit tightly into the layered cylinder holes so they need to be in alignment.

But I realized that not all layers have to have the same round openings.
The two intermediate layers can be cut as octagons.
As long as the bottom layers and top layer have the proper circle openings.
This greatly speeds up the cutting of those intermediate wraps!
Less circle holes to manually cut!

(or, if you wish, you can still cut them all as circles, I will leave the circle artwork in place)

I used a straight edge and quickly cut out all the openings in less than half the time.
I will align them in the same manner (when wrapping).

And, almost there!

First intermediate layers installed,
second intermediates going on...

final wraps cut and waiting.

A fantastic project, and an important/interesting subject. It would be a great addition to build and display beside one of your P-47s.

Good start.

So, the Crankcase is complete...all wraps in place with no serious issues.

I got the wrap lengths sorted but its obvious that if you don't cut the parts precisely,
your wrap part could be fractionally long or short when you install it.
I'm talking less than .5mm but its enough to cause a slight overlap (which can be trimmed)
or a slight gap (not a big issue with intermediate layers).

I also noticed that its possible to adjust the length of a wrap when installing, by stretching a little bit
or relaxing the placement to shorten the overall length. (Its easy to add or drop .5mm !!)

Each wrap layer hides the one before it, but its best to get each one as right as possible.

It is important to keep the wraps aligned as you wrap around the crankcase...this was my biggest worry.
I started by gluing the center of each wrap tot eh carnkcase and worked outward, around the crankcase cylinder.
I glued short sections (about 2cm) at a time and worked my way to the ends...
each time taking great care not to deviate even a microscopic amount.
Once you get to the ends, the deviation is exaggerated!

I didn't do much edge colouring (laziness) but it doesnt need a lot.
And the majority of the crankcase is probably hidden deep inside the engine assembly.

I fitted part of the (failed) cylinder to see what it looks like.
Now its time to redesign the cylinder assemblies!

LOL I wouldn't go that far!
Its work...which keeps me busy...along with the hundred other projects I decide to do all at once!

I need to put it aside for a while, to focus on a couple of Koolwheelz models and a new Holiday model.

Hope this is of some help.
