I loved the original BR - for its time if was really advanced in terms of the scenery and ambiance and still holds up just as well today. Better then a host of current SciFi films out there right now....

I wish they hadn't come out with all those different editions. Really enjoyed the first version. The other versions seemed odd

The film underwent so many cuts, edits and changes, that it deserves to be seen in its different forms.
Even the theatrical releases were different in different countries.
The existence of many deleted and cut scenes allows for a complete new edit of the film that fans would like to see.

And of course, theres the voice-over edit.
What you call the "first version", is actually the studio forced re-edit for the American market.
This was not part of the original film and not Ridley's original choice.
But the film didn't test well and the studio ordered the voice narration.
Many, like myself, prefer the narrated version...but it is interesting and respectful to view Scott's original artwork as it was intended.

Even if you aren't a fan of this film, you still have to appreciate what went into it.
A great screenplay adapted from the work of one of SciFis biggest Authors (Philip K Dick).
Syd Mead's incredible designs for sets and vehicles.
Ridley's Scott's grand scale and epic feel he somehow imparts into his films.
The amazing costumes, gadgets, models, miniatures and set pieces.
One of the last great non-CGI science fiction films.
And of course, one of the most incredible music soundtracks put to film.

I have waffled for years, over whether I consider this the top sci-fi film ever.
Its a hard choice and an unfair comparison when you consider films made at different times.
Top honours must probably go to 2001, no matter how long and drawn out and confusing that film might be (lol).
I guess I have to at least put Blade Runner in my 'top ten' list....

I was thinking, Sanger's recent release of a miniature paper Tyrell Building
Tyrell Building
would make a great diorama base for my KoolWheelz Flying Police Spinner!
I don't know why I didn't think to design that model?!!

You'll just have to build all and enjoy my BR KoolWheelz cars in a "street scene".
Maybe a photobackdrop is in order?...I'll have to think about that.

Agree Dave with your ratings!

Another film, aside from BR and 2001, was the original Alien (not the others) - at the time the alieness was awesome. Been flogged to death sadly now.

Read "The Mote in Gods Eye" for a very intelligent first alien contact book.

Another film I saw when it was released!...about 6 times!
I was in College...Auto Mechanic...and they showed current movies in the Auditorium every day at Lunch.
Alien had just recently come out, and I guess whoever handled the movies, decided to show it every day for 2 weeks!
So, I saw it a few times and fell in love.

Other than Terminator, I am not a fan of all James Cameron's "rip offs".
For me, Alien will be a single, stand alone classic.
Probably the greatest sci-fi/horror/lost in space movie ever.
And yes, another Ridley Scott masterpiece.
Aliens and all the sequels were just "action" flicks...without substance, or a soul.

I read mostly Time Travel related sci-fi, but I digress from time to time.
Bought a paperback a few years ago, that turned out to be a fun read.
"Agent to the Stars" by John Scalzi.
An Alien race come to Earth, planning to make first contact and become friends
but because they are hideously ugly and smell real bad, they fear the first impressions.
So they hire a Hollywood Agent to handle their "coming out".
Yes...its a bit of a comedy.

For a truly 'alien' alien, it has to be The Thing (Kurt Russel version) No CGI, all mechanical effects which are still jaw dropping even now.
Yes, what cab ?

Yes, I liked that movie.
Even the original "Thing" is a good movie.
Pretty old, I know, but just as creepy.

Unfortunately...no KoolWheelz from that one.
