Didn't Digital Navy used to offer a sample download of the catapult on USS Arizona? I vaguely recall seeing a picture of that part of the ship with the catapult circled and a download offered.

Is this something that would make a viable retail kit?
A deck catapult display or diorama piece for larger scale aircraft? 1/50, 1/33? I already sell a Carrier display/diorama base. Its 1/50 scale but could be printed larger. Do these catapults differ greatly from aircraft to aircraft, boat to boat, nation to nation? Or is there a generic style that could be created? I've already done a search for IJN Catapult and seen some 3D modeled designs. So I know what that thing looks like. Just curious. Might make an interesting diversion for me...if its something that has retail potential (I'll be honest).

I would be up for a USN catapult. I would even buy it before my next birthday in February.

most nations used their own designs but by convergent evolution they are all similar. a girder like structure in the length needed to launch the aircraft. some sort of access platforms to service and hook the planes up, then the actual launch mechanism, usually some sort of pistons driven by a charge, explosive, i.e. black powder, or compressed steam. the cradles, the part needed to attach the aircraft to the catapult are similar as they cradle the floats and slam into the end releasing the aircraft.

I think a WW II US Navy catapault would go over well in 1/33 scale.
I'd buy one Even for Orlik's Kingfisher. airdave, shot you a PM Cheers, Ian |

Dave - I would, of course, buy a catapult if you design one and make it available (but you know my track record on actually building).
Looks like you may have started something, Ian. Don |

Its not something I know anything about or even understand.
For example, how does each plane attach, or sit on the catapult? And how do I deal with that in model form? I make no promises or pretend to have any knowledge of these catapults. Obviously it will take much more research to get a better understanding. As I said to Ian in PM, I am interested in potential retail projects ...but also in getting myself out of this design slump. So this topic caught my attention. I have many retail projects on my list, but can't get started on any of them. I've stayed focused on making more Koolwheelz models ...its the only thing I seem to be able to stick with successfully. Unfortunately it doesn't make me any money and my hobby fund is drying up real fast! lol

Dave,
I appreciate you showing an interest in this, and I also understand that you have a business to run, so if it does come to fruition, so much the better. Thanks, Cheers, Ian |
