DSV Limiting Factor
Three crewed vehicles have reached the bottom of the Challenger Deep in the Marianna Trench, the deepest point on earth's seabed at 35,800 feet (10,900m), where the water pressure is 16,000 lbs per square inch.
In 1960, the Italian-built "Trieste" became the first crewed vessel to reach the bottom of Challenger Deep. After several deep dives in other parts of the seabed, the Trieste was retired in 1965. The Polish publisher WAK offers a 1/50-scale kit of the Trieste. The "Deepsea Challenger" reached the bottom of the Challenger Deep in 2012 piloted solo by movie director James Cameron. It was retired after a single dive that damaged many of its systems. Julius Perdana's 1/35-scale paper kit of the Deepsea Challenger is available from Paper Replika. Today, the Deep-Submergence Vehicle "Limiting Factor" is the only crewed vehicle capable of descending to any place in the deep ocean. In 2018, its owner Victor Vescovo launched the Five Deeps Expedition, with the objective of visiting the deepest points of all five of the world's oceans and mapping the vicinity. The project was completed in August 2019 and included two trips to the Challenger Deep. The DSV has since made more than a dozen trips to map and study the deepest, remotest place on the planet. In its own way, the DSV Limiting Factor is as significant to human knowledge and exploration as Apollo 11, but I can find no scale model of it in paper or any other medium. There is plenty of information available, and I hope some designer will step up and fill the gap.

That would make for a fun model. But for that matter, I’d settle for a good, detailed model of DSV Alvin in its current configuration.

Doesn't look too detailed, but stumbled across this page: Just a moment... Maybe someone can translate the page and tell us if it is available for download purchase - the price looks right. Regards, John Edit: found an online translator. Don't bother, it is an old auction site. Last edited by yukonjohn; 11-30-2023 at 07:11 PM. |

The kit was originally published by the Czech(?) model magazine ABC.

The Alvin kit is available here: https://shop.papermodel.cz/en/all-go...obot-jason-jr/
The price, 79 Czech Korona is US$3.54 at current exchange. I expect postage would be about twice that?
