Look like this is an easy quiz to guess, everybody can guess even though I haven't shown the engines on the wings. I think I'll have to make it harder to guess in the next quiz time. :-P

Not just any admiral but Yamamoto himself. IIRC, this was because Allied intelligence had broken the Japanese naval cypher and intercepted a message about the flight.
There is some misunderstanding about which pilot actually downed the Betty.

Looks like no one has guessed the variant correctly yet. Does anyone else want to take a guess?

G4M1. An early one as evidenced by Astrodome and lack of top gun turret. That's why I'm hoping for one of the planes that attacked Force Z .

If you take the totality of the the pilot's reports and the physical damage to the downed Betty, there's little dispute these days that Barber's claims better fit with reality.

If you are still looking for a P-40N scheme, how about the "Stocky Edwards" P-40N that Vintage Wings of Canada used to own:

Take a sneak peek at the progress of the G4M1 Betty model I'm currently designing!

Check out the render below to get a glimpse of how it's shaping up. We're at the stage where I'm gearing up to start the test build. Stay tuned for more updates!
