B-17 Flying Fortress
This is a project that has been a long time in the making. Here are some photos of how the B-17 fuselage is shaping up. This particular configuration is for a mid-production block B-17F. My plan is to set up templates for all the major B-17 variants. When they are all complete I can then start to draw individual aircraft. My next step is to modify this rear fuselage for the Cheyenne tail turret and staggered waist guns of the late production B-17Gs. Once templates are set up for the big tailed Fortresses, I’ll go back and set up templates for the “shark fins”. I have already re-designed the rear fuselage for these early B-17s. It just needs the surface detail added. Working with Scott on the Stratoliners really moved this project ahead as the 307 shares many components with the B-17. The only major engineering work still to do is the inner engine nacelles, those pesky wing fairings and the top turrets of which there are two major versions. I’d also like to include a bomb bay like I did for the B-24s. The forward fuselages and turtle backs for all versions are pretty much complete. The B-17B thru E nose piece is still getting some tweaking. The next update will show how the horizontal stabilizers fit.

John
Please let us know what scale is this model? Also, as a suggestion, please consider a separate rudder and elevators as they were really pronounced on the real plane. Also, for the engine nacelle, please consider conical sections as appose to the petal design. My last experience with another B-17 designer did not go well. I wish you the best. Good luck Isaac

John the shapes looks great. The b-17 isn't one of my favorite planes but I'm going to buy one at least for you. I'm appreciate a lot the design and the texture work on your models.

I’m glad to see several of you are as excited about this model as I am. I’ve been a hard core B-17 fanatic since I was a young child so I really want to get these right.
This model will be in 1/48 scale just like the B-24s and Stratoliners. I always include reduction percentage information for those who may want to scale them down to 1/72 or 1/87 scale. Issac, I wasn’t planning to do separate control surfaces. My background is in illustration so my engineering skills are pretty basic. I’ve posted a detail shot of one of the Stratoliner vertical stabilizers so you can get an idea of what the B-17 control surfaces will eventually look like. And don’t worry, no “petal” engine cowls on this one. I always thought that was a strange design choice on the Fly B-17G. If you check out my B-24s and the Stratoliner on ecardmodels you will get a good idea of how these kits will look and go together.
