Food for thought for you designers

Hey I got this as an attachement and was wowed by the story. It puts down the political bariers and shows some of the humanity demonstrated even in battle.

People fight wars , people die in wars. Good people and bad people. These were good guys. I have a neightbor who died named Fritz Ruebeck. He died about 5 years ago. He was in the Wermacht and while in Russia he was ordered by the SS to kill 80 civilians. He refused and hid them, all of them. The Germans were retreating and Fritz hid with the Russians. The Gestapo was looking for him. He told me the Russians smuggled him back to Germany. About 15 years ago he got a letter and an airplane ticket to the town in Russsia. He went thinking he could meet some people and wrap up a circle in his life. He was astonished that most of the town turned out when they got their. He was invited to view the memorial they built to him and the 80 villagers he saved. That was all he could talk about till the day he died. He said, "John, when you make a Russian your friend, you have a friend for life".

Very touching story - would make a nice diorama if one could model the plane damage well enough.

Not so sure about the story's accuracy.

I had not found that sight Ryan, but after reading 3 or 4 other sights, it sounds likely that there's some truth to the story one way or the other. The BF109 fighter saw a limping B17 and did not shoot it down. It seems the why and the 'guiding it' are the only possible BS parts. It's possible based on the link you posted that Franz was tailing it and had another Luftwaffe aircraft been spotted he then would have shot - who can really tell.
