Gimp 2,
Well after my troubles with the computer, I no longer have the photoshop that was with the laptop when i bought it so have to use gimp it seems. Never used it before and I opened a file I know had a lot of layers yet it only shows the one layer when i opened it. does anyone know how to get all the layers to be showing? or is it unable to have more than one layer in a project?

I know that Gimp has layers, but navigating them is still a mystery to me. Have you considered trying Image Forge (link to the freebie version is on ecardmodels.com).

I may be wrong, but the native format of PhotoShop with the layers information is different from the native format of GIMP with its layer information, so it might not read the PhotoShop layers information. Sometimes you can open an image with the native format file extension in another program, but the editing abilities are not transferred and you get a flattened image.
If that is what happened you might be able to select individual areas on the image in GIMP and promote the selection to a new layer. I don't use GIMP or PS, but have done something similar in PaintShop Pro.

Gimp is capable to manage layers, with Ctrl + L keys you can see the layers box. There you can see all the layers on your project and turn it off or on.
