Light Dome

Here are a few more renderings by Blind Mojo Johnny demonstrating the lighting and shadow effects of using a light dome projection.

Note that the model is only 50% complete and the lights and textures on the model have been scrubbed on the import and are now being slowly redone.

The difference being that a simple "background image" doesn't cast EXACT light and shadows that the light dome projection does.

Moving this model from Autocad to Maya has definitely been "a period of transition"...

Texturing

Here are two more images, as you can see, we are now reapplying all of the textures (coloration) that got scrubbed in the transfer.

Sorry for the delay, getting the ship moved and now to have it's grand opening on Memorial day weekend, everybody involved has been "up to their necks in it" but this will soon be over and I can get back to what I'm supposed to be doing.

78th celebration

I was welcomed to witness the celebration of the ship's 78th birthday,Friday last, the youngest onboard at 16 and the eldest at 79 were chosen to cut the cake with a Naval dress sword, after cutting, they were jokingly dissuaded from licking the blade clean!

The eldest at 79, being born a year before the ship was launched, I joking suggested that he was "being built" about the same time as the ship was!

I had a fantastic time with fantastic people, preparations are now being made to provide for a grand opening on Memorial Day weekend, a very fitting time.

I have one last task ahead of me and then I'm ready to prototype the first model.

Grand Opening

I want to take the time to thank everyone here for their patience and understanding as this has really been "quite the undertaking".

Today it became official, the ribbon was cut and the U.S.S. ORLECK now begins a new journey, an opening for this Memorial Day Weekend's, Grand Opening Celebration.

While this may seem insignificant, quite the opposite as it is a "moment in time" when the efforts of so many for so long, have now come to fruition.

I'm honored to be a small part of it.

In these images, from left to right:

Jim Webb, Jacksonville Naval Museum Executive Director, Jim was the first person I met when I was first chartered and then given a private tour of the ship, so basically, Jim is the one who first introduced me to the ship and to "Navy Rum" in general, a "warm welcome" that I will never forget.

Behind Jim is Charlie Davis, Ship Superintendent, cutting the ribbon is Greg Allen, Vice President of the Jacksonville Naval Museum, and to the far right, Pat Geer, IT specialist with the museum.

It was one small moment but one giant milestone.

With this ship now moved and opened, things are now progressing, preparing to first identify and establish criteria for this first model for STEM student's, hopefully I'll be prototyping it in no time because after a year and a half behind the computer, I'm "more than ready" for some "paper-therapy"!

Again I want to thank everyone for accompanying me on this journey.

-Fred

It's amazing that much time has passed already! Time flies when you're having fun... And now you're even a member of the museum staff! Pretty cool...

Best regards,
Kurt

It's only been a year that I've been designing the virtual ship but I was in front of the computer six months prior.

Either way, it's too much time to go without "bending paper" so I'm pretty eager to get started on the first card model for STEM students.
