Best regards,

This is excellent work and I am also surprised by the authorities for being so helpful. We had the same FRAM ships in Greece till the 90s only we used to fly an Alluette III heli from the back instead of a drone. In a couple of ships they upgraded their firepower by adding 2 Harpoons and an Oto Melara 76 mm gun in the aft deck.

I am also definitely watching this, step by step....

There are lots of Gearing fans our here watching your progress. Especially the DASH progress, since half the funny stories seem to concern that particular piece of equipment.

Just an idea... When I built my father a model of 'his' Gearing, the fun part was tracing the evolution of the modifications, and trying to pinpoint the layout when he was aboard.

If the model you are commissioned to develop is a physical model, then one version is kind of the requirement, and that will be the current configuration. But if you are developing a paper model for the giftshop, well, that sort of opens the realm of possibilities, doesn't it? As built, FRAM 1 which was apparently very different for different ships (some even got 3 in. anti aircraft guns), FRAM 3 (which I think from memory) was the last, maybe even the year when the ship earned the most "E's."

The difference that sent me down this particular rabbit hole was the life rafts. The model I based on was the Higbee and had cork life rafts, while the pictures Dad had showed big ugly black rubber rafts sort of rolled up.

I think there was even day to day changes, like white canvas for special occasions.

Doesn't that sound like a hoot to you?

It's absolutely fascinating the upgrades that the gearing class went through, I had this discussion with the museum, whether to focus on one specific time frame or to represent as currently the "museum piece"

For example, for the museum, they added a set of steps behind the rear turret to access the flight deck.

So the question was to include the steps as a contemporary depiction as a "museum ship" or to omit the steps as was in deployment.

The decision was to include them but make them optional.

Regarding the DASH, if the ship model is put out at 1/200, the drone will be included but will be so small that it won't be able to be assembled with and resemblance of detail.

The solution it was decided that the DASH would also be made available as a, "stand alone" model in a much larger scale.

So essentially the museum will have two models available.

Okay, so I spent the weekend doing some short (1 minute) animations viewing the model as developed so far.

These turned out fairly well and I would like to share them but I don't know the best way to make them easily available, any suggestions?, I really don't want to put them on YouTube but I don't want anybody watching it on my personal cloud account either.

Let me know the best way and I'll make them available, they are .mp4's...

That's a good idea to have the museum steps as optional parts. Now the builder can either do a model of the ship in service or as "the ship I toured".

Best regards,
Kurt

Video link

This is a 30 second flyby of the model, note that the starboard side is detailed whereas the port side is void of details, (that's next)->
