Asroc

I've tried to update this thread several times just to get expelled from the site each time I try to upload photo's so I'll try again.

This is what we were discussing recently, the ASROC control center, I told them that I could model the inside as easily as the outside for purposes of animating the targeting and launch of the ASROC.

The Museum is interested in using the computer model to animate parts of a, "virtual tour" for those who are handicapped and cannot board the ship.

Hi FRD,
(I'm having the same problem getting locked out of the site).

That is amazing you can model all of this, and now the museum wants to be able to do the virtual tour thing!
Best regards,
Kurt

photo-realism (?)

"One of the things I've noticed about steel ship is how bumpy they are. The wind, waves, and docks push the plates in between the frames leaving vague square patterns on the sides. I've spent a lot of time looking a Great Lakes freighters, and even the new ones look worn in and worn out.

I haven't yet seen anyone model those defects, but I'm new at this. How do you decide that a detail is too small for your scale and should be skipped over?"

Bill- I had actually considered that, "photo-realism" before, I have never done that but have given it careful consideration and this would be a, "prime candidate" the problem is that I'm a, "draftsman", not an, "artist" but is something that I've been considering as well.

Wafered like Ship hulls!!

I knew I had seen a discussion on hull texture here. Consensus seems to be if the oilcan effect is desired, then artwork is the way to go (like weathering a tank or plane). CMDRTED had an alternative, he suggested burnishing the hull sections before installation.

I suspect people prefer smooth hulls.

Preference for smooth hulls notwithstanding, here is my favorite picture of my Father's Gearing. The lighting is about as harsh as can be.

I could use the actual photographs to create it, it's really a matter of how much time I want to put into it.

Okay, I want to get back to just still images but here it the latest update for the museum.

It took me two weeks rather than the projected one week but here it is, the PORT side of the ship.

All of the features are in place, I'll fine tune all of the textures and coloration later.

The purpose of this particular shot is because now I'll render a night scene for comparison.

The same scene at night, I have to troubleshoot why some of the lights didn't come on.

lights

Okay, time to update, this is the last animation of the ship that I will be doing for awhile, the sole purpose was to mark all of the light positions, so far I've located 28 point lights and 4 spot lights, I'm sure I'll find more as I proceed as this model is only now about 40% complete, I've still got a long way to go. One BIG "glaring error" is the white line across the stern of the ship, this will be corrected before it is animated again., once done and I have nothing better to do, I can go back and apply individual variables to each and every light such as intensity, color and, "fall off". I still have to add the red and green navigation lights, that will add little color, the backdrop you see is only temporary as when the model is done I can then focus on the surrounding, "environment", right now, I just wanted to locate, organize, name and make sure that all of the lights were working as they should, now I can get back to detailing the turrets where I should be.

The purpose for establishing the lighting is because this ship is currently docked "downtown" with it's future mooring near the stadium, the museum asked if it could illustrate festive lighting for events such as Christmas and as supporting the local NFL team.

My ONLY intent at this point is to mark established lighting positions.

You know, it's like my momma used to tell me when I was small, "we don't like it when you're quiet, it makes us wonder what your up to", so long story short, I've been working with others diligently, just didn't want to post anymore YouTube links.

I met with the museum again today on the ship, a lot has transpired.

If I'm not mistaken the city renewed the current lease and they will be open to the the public at it's current location beginning on the 28th while the final place is prepared, I'm honored to be a part of it.

One thing proposed it that they will publish from time to time, "letters to home" sent from those who served onboard... these will be published HERE as they become available.

Met early this morning in the wardroom, then I got everything I was missing such as images of the torpedo tubes and TOPS of the turrets, (I needed that info)..

They expressed an interest of using this model, when complete in promotional, video material.
