What glossy paper type is the best for models?
I'm designing a paper model of an airplane that is very glossy. It will be offset printed, and I'd like to print it on a glossy coated paper, 180-200gr/m.
But... The top layer of the glossy coated paper I used in the past is cracking on the crease/fold, and a lot of white powder comes out. Question: are there models printed on glossy paper when it fits the object? Or is a non-coated paper the best choice whatsoever? What brand/type of glossy paper would be the best choice? |

I like glossy paper. I have good luck with brochure paper. It is more plastic than paper and very uunforgiving. But it is made for laser printing, I assume there is an equivalent for offset printing.

I have had good luck with brochure paper also, though I use it on an inkjet printer. Seeing as the name is brochure, it was probably originally intended for use with an offset printer.

I still like the glossy finish of brochure paper.
But my normal favorite glue (Aleene's tacky glue) would sometimes fail to hold. I had good luck with Scotch Quick Dry adhesive, held much stronger. The tube lasted since about 2005. Time to buy more. Scotch has since discontinued the product. And then re-released it under a new name. A very similar name to the replacement product... it is all somewhat confusing. Here is what seems to be very close to what I remember: "permanent tacky glue" Stick with me for more glue tips! |

There are so many papers out there, it is difficult to weed out what you need.
I haven't tried a very glossy paper in a long time. The only thing I can suggest is to try a bunch out. Some recommended papers for art printing include Hahnemuhle Fine Art Pearl 285gsm, Epson Metallic Glossy 257gsm, and Epson Premium Glossy 252gsm. "It doesn't get any glossier than this". I am willing to bet that the Epson papers are impossible to glue anything to. You can get samples or sample packages from many paper distributors/manufacturers. |

In my experience, I only choose to print flat surfaces on glossy paper. The cracking and glue, I use CA glue, are an issue to be sure. I might recommend using a spray overcoat to get the glossy sheen. You can get the overcoat from any hardware store and roll a couple forms to test and see if you like the spray.

I just pulled the paper replika DH beaver down from the shelf where it has been sitting for a year. It is all brochure paper, printed with our Brother color laser. Very few sharp bends in this design, almost all are on the pontoons. I don't see any cracking of the color. I used regular Aileen's tacky glue, no failures. The model is not at all shiny, I just like the colors being brilliant and not bleeding into each other.
Next model is an airliner, but I intend to use the permanent tacky glue from Scotch. The glue in the friendly bi-lingual bottle. al |

When I want a glossy finish I use the cheapest gloss photo paper I can find.
Walmart sells PEN+GEAR photo paper, 50, 8.5" x 11" at 8.5 mil for $10.50. It's thin, dry's fast, and doesn't crack. The few models I've done with it turned out fine. Good luck... P-lite |

Now I am looking for a replacement for the brochure paper I like.
I was looking to order more brochure paper (specifically HP Brochure paper). I really like its finish that results from the laser printer. Also, it is a polypropylene paper which cuts very clean on a laser cutter, no charring at all. The only way I know it is polypropylene is from the recycle triangle which has PP underneath it. (This is important because no chlorine, including PVC, must be cut with a laser.) So now that I am looking for more, it appears HP has discontinued it. Or has changed the packaging, it is hard to tell. (just like my previous post about the Scotch glue!) Anyone out there in model land notice the PP under the recycle triangle? thanks! |
