Reporting Pirated models...filing DMCA reports

Yes you can do something to stop those who are sharing your models online.

File a DMCA or Takedown Notice with the company that is hosting the download file.

To share a model online, it usually has to be stored somewhere so it can be accessed and downloaded by the public easily.
This is the File Hosting company or the "file-hoster".
Many file host sites offer free file hosting services by displaying advertising to anyone accessing their services.

When you click on a model link, you are commonly transferred to a download page maintained by the file host.
There may or may not be advertising on these pages as part of the revenue generating scheme.

If your models are being pirated, you can take action that works.
You can file DMCA reports (takedown notices) with all file hosts.

Yes, it takes a little effort, but it isn't that difficult.
Basically it involves sending an email to the abuse department of the file host.
Every file hosting company has an abuse reporting email address.

As long as the report contains the correct info in a standard format, it will be looked at.
To speed up the process, you can keep a copy of a past takedown notice and reuse it, replacing the necessary info.

As a matter of fact I filed two reports this morning regarding a pirated model (of mine) on a well known russian crap-pirate site.
One of the file hosts, deposit-files, responded and blocked access to the file I reported in only 7 minutes!!
Honestly...I sent the takedown notice at 8.58am...and got a reply at 9.05am saying the file was removed!!!
This doesn't always happen...often it takes a day or two but some places respond very quickly because they don't want to be involved.

.......
Remember, most pirates are in it for the rewards and don't give a crap about you!

Those who pirate paper models don't care* about you or what they steal and share.
The sharing effort serves two purposes for them:

a. to avoid paying for a model

and more importantly
b. to earn credit for distributing work this way.
The credit comes in the form of financial rewards through web traffic or advertising,
and the personal reward of praise for being a self claimed "robin hood" of the internet.

This last excuse (robin hood) was actually given to me by a russian model thief. lol

*In many cases, pirated models are incomplete, old and out dated, damaged, lower quality and don't offer the same resources for support and assistance.
More reasons NOT to download pirated kits!

.................
You can create your own DMCA report /Takedown Notice.
I have attached a basic email type report you can use as a template.
(windows text file...simple, just copy and paste the text into an email)

If you search online, there are standard reports that can be used as templates.

Some file hosts require filling in their own Form, but most accept a takedown notice through a dedicated email address.
usually something like "abuse@filehost.com"

What do you mean 'to avoid paying for a model'?
And as per my observation most pirates are Russian and some are Chinese?
Most Chinese pirates sell printed photocopies of models, they just remove the logo!
There are tons of pirated models on eBay and other e commerce sites.

they offer the models to people who dont wish to pay for them (financially or with effort and consideration)

everyone on a russian pirate site is downloading a model for free.
if you download a model from there, you are now a "pirate"
and you avoided paying money for the model.

pirates are not just the ones copying and resharing the files.

this thread is titled "reporting pirate models - filing DMCA reports" which is/was my primary focus.
I'm well aware there are many forms of internet piracy related to paper model

The couple of my models that got "pirated" are my free downloads. Some one took them and rescaled and printed hard copies and they sell those. That would be "Model Alice" out of china. I have no idea how well un upscaled version of my CSS Raleigh will work, but I am unwilling to pay 119.00 to find out!

Awesome Dave.

Glad you let us know there are steps to be taken, even eBay needs to be wary.

Big thing is an official form submitted. Instead of just emailing or a chat session, that they can take of leave.

Official forms work wonders.

Mike

eBay is a bit different, but there is still a working process.

I was recently informed about a guy in the UK...selling a printed copy of one of my models (on UK ebay)

I had to register with Vero...thats ebays own thing to protect copyrights...and then I filled out a report about the listing.

As it turned out, the seller removed the listing at my request before ebay had to take action.

The seller claimed he had received a large collection of paper model kits, and this already printed kit was in the grouping.
Since he knew he was never going to build all these kits, he was selling off.
I found it odd that this was the only kit he had listed, but I had no other reason to doubt him...and since he removed the listing before it sold, I didn't take it further.

Anyway, the point is, you can contact sellers directly (on ebay)
and you can register with the Vero thing, and deal directly with ebay for takedowns.

eBay VeRO

...
This is one of the FAQs on the VeRO page...but it applies to other websites too:

What if I don't own intellectual property?
Since the VeRO program is for rights owners, if you don't own intellectual property rights and aren't their authorized representative, you won't be able to report items through the program.
However, you can still help by getting in touch with legitimate rights owners (companies or individuals who hold intellectual property rights)
and encouraging them to contact us about participating in the VeRO program.

You can also inform them of potentially problematic listings.
