If you wanted to work with something that uses very little power. Use a 555 timer integrated circuit. You can use a resistor and capacitor to make the light flicker however you want and it runs off of 5 volts. Most come with a pin-out to describe how it's hooked up. This website will calculate everything you need. Just enter the values. Very Simple, you will have no trouble using it, based on what I have seen you do.

It is very easy to do, takes up a minute amount of space, and works for a variety of functions, just about anything you can come up with, that needs to be timed.
