On 12 December 1941, 81 years ago today, Captain Jesus Villamor, commander of the Phillipine Army Air Corps 6th Pursuit Squadron shot down a Japanese bomber over the Philippines. Villamor was flying a P-26 Peashooter and his aerial victory is (so far as I know) the only one credited to a P-26. VIllamor was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross.
Some sources credit Villamor with downing two Japanese aircraft. Jesus Villamor - Recipient - Japanese Attack on the Philippines: The “Other” Pearl Harbor - Warfare History Network Filipinas Heritage Library | Jesus Villamor: Soldier, Spy Jesus A. Villamor - Wikipedia Don |

Thanks for putting this out there Don, he's one of our legendary heroes and Villamor Air base is named after him.
A few years ago I heard a group of IPMS Philippines members were building a full scale static replica of his P26 to display in a museum, but I don't know what the current status of that project is. It's just sad that in this time of instant information he gets way less attention from the younger generation than some random Instagram or Tiktok sensation. |
