Heinkel He P.1078B (Luft46)
Hi all!
I've started designing the He P.1078B fighter. Just in case you don't know that the P.1078B is, you'll find more info over at the Luft'46 site. Anyway, after studying the luftart images from Luft46, I came to the conclusion that this model will require a lot of complex curved surfaces. I reckoned it would be a good opportunity to play around with the Spline/Catmull surface functions offered by Metaseq. I started off with the fuselage: Blech!!!! After countless attempts, I kept winding up with something that looks like it was made from clay. I finally gave up and made the fuselage the traditional way -- Cylinder + Knife + scaling... I didn't fully abandon the Spline/Catmull though. In fact, it did a very good job at making the wings! The spline allowed me to quickly and uniformly do the tear-drop shape required for the wing chord. Once satisfied with the general shape of the wings, I told Metaseq to produce a wireframe. Some quick node alignments and a knife cut to do the downward wing tip, and voila! Instant wings! Creation of the left and right pods was pretty straightforward: Putting it all together yielded the following: To do the intakes, I 'extruded' the front part of the fuselage inwards. I then started making the wheels. Next stop --- BOOLEAN. |

Don't know Metaseq can create wireframe from spline, Can you please tell me how? Thank you very much in advance...

Eric,
It looks like you've done well here and captured the basic shape of the aircraft. I really like the Luft '46 stuff and look forward to seeing where you go with this. Keep up the great work! Jeff |

I'm pretty much done cutting apart the components using Metaseq's boolean function. The wing is pretty much intact. I'm thinking of using this as the main piece. I'm hoping if I strengthen this with formers, it will provide enough rigidity that the other parts might not need to have formers. The left and right pods. They'll be wrapped around the wing assembly. The same treatment is applied to the main fuselage. Well... maybe I'll need to use formers for this. With that done, I started working on the landing gears: Now this is where I hit a major snag.... :( My next move was to carve out the wheel wells from the pods. To do this, I simulated raising the landing gears. Based on the Luft46 pictures, the rear gears swivel to the front, while the front gear swivels backward. The pods were wide enough to accomodate the large wheels... But DAMN! The front and rear wheels don't fit along the length of the fuselage. I'll need to either scale down those wheels or shorten the struts. |

It seems to have very high ground clearance for the type of aircraft...just wondering if the struts could be shortened and still have adequate rough field clearance for the wing tips?
