1/200 vs 1/400

I found it interesting how doubling the scale makes it look so much bigger. On top is the JSC 1/400 Mikasa. Below is the Oriel 1/200 Mikasa

Unfortunately also is the fact that given a printer with a large enough format to double the size of a given print, the original design sometimes doesnt produce well...pixelation and fading of colors and such! Oh well.....sometimes you settle for 1/300 right?

yup if i have to.i like big models so the smaller the ship in real life the bigger the scale i like.ie missile boats=1;50,destroyes 1;100,battleships and carriers 1;200.i apply the same to aircraft.ie fighters 1;24 or 1;33,tarnsport and bombers 1;72.airliners 1;100.just my preference thats all.the two exceptions i make are the alan rose dc3 and any of airdaves 1;48 herks

After years of working in the divine scale for styrene ship models (1/700), the first time I found a ship in 1/200 scale that was pretty much all she wrote for me. I much prefer 1/200 scale for the detailing level that it affords. I have done a few 1/400 scale styrene models, Polish ships and such. While it is all right, it is still a cut below the grand scale of 1/200. It just my personal opinion, so don't get anything in a bunch over it.

Every year or so I wrestle with the same dilemma. I love detail. However there are a couple factors that keeps me in 1/400. The 1st and foremost is space. A typical cruiser is @ 3 feet long in 1/200. The 2nd is time. yes detail is great we all love it but the last Prinz Eugen model was close to 50 pages of very small detail. It would take you a year full time to build her up. A happy medium is @ 1/300 to 1/250 scale. but these scales have limited kits unless you resize and after market parts, rails barrels etc are limited also. In 1/400 I find there are after market parts a plenty, you can use 1/350 for all but the largest details and in truth if you look at our plastic brothers they pack way more details in 1/700 scale than most 1/200 scale card models that I've seen. So 1/400 is do-able with a good representation of detail. Keep in mind this is only my opinion but I've given the reasons for. every one of us is different and an artist in our own rights.
