Pendulum clock
Hi all !
I have for some time had a book containing all the parts necessary to make a working pendulum clock. I can't quite lay my hands on it at the moment due to the mess, otherwise I would tell you it's title. What I'm asking is, has anyone on the forum built one ? If so, do you have any useful hints or tips before I start ? Thanks Liz

I have not built a clock from a book.
I did build the Recoil Anchor Escapement that can be found on the Paper Clock Project page GlueČ Chronicle What I found to make it work good is to tweak the length of the pendulum arm and adjust the amount of weight in the pendulum. Probably need to keep an eye on that when making the clock. It also helped to make sure the folds were crisp and at right angles and allow the glue to dry before moving on. I bought both the Recoil Anchor Escapement and the Paper Pendulum Clock from that site. Looking through my stash of paper model books shows that I have a book called Make Your Own Working Paper Clock by James Smith Rudolph with a preface by Isaac Asimov.

If it is the one with the orange cover, then I think we have at least one build here on the boards
If it is the ones from Wrebbit, i know that we have had one build of the Black Forest Clock

Webdude did make one, i have seen the pictures, and he mentioned that it would work for about 2 minutes or so at a time.
I also think DJStratoArt started one, not sure what his status on that is

I've made a couple of clocks and the wrebbit carousel. None of them worked after a few minutes.
The biggest problem is friction and the second is a lack of stiffness of the card, it won't support the weight if the weights and the friction of the cogs. You could try heaver card where needed and "lubricating" the moving parts with candle wax. I don't know the kit you have so hopefully a careful build and luck will be on your side! Cheers Mike |

Humidity really messes them up too. A little warping here, a little warping there and pretty soon you have a strange looking wall ornament.

You might try PM'ing henryk, a member here. He has designed and built several clocks of card that ran smoothly and quite well. He goes off on nature treks and can be gone for months at a time so you may not get an answer right away.

Pendulum clock
I built this some 35 years ago; I still have it and, before the rubber band drive perished and broke, it would run for 4 - 6 hours.
I used brass shim material, (very thin brass sheet) drilled and cut into small squares and fixed with pva (I think, may have been Evostik); this overcame the friction problem and allowed it to run for so long. It made a loud ticking noise through the hollow card components and would need tilting off vertical to get even running. |
