This is how I create parts...with my minds eye and some math!
In general I don't use 3D software (CAD, Sketchup, etc) to design my models.
I create almost everything already unfolded in 2D with Coreldraw.

So it means creating basic drawing patterns and using a lot of math.

I do a good job of imagining the part and how it will assemble...
but theres usually some trial and error with test fitting parts.

Calculating an elliptical tube with offset ends is fairly straightforward
but you need to establish some basic things first...

Also try this, build the formers for your funnel and drape paper over them, trace the shape and you are good.

Iím assuming that you you are given the expanded shape of the funnel in the kit, if it is a kit. Iíve just made the funnel for HMVís SMS Beowulf, which is a true cylinder, not tapered. Iíve also made the gun barrels which are tapered.
In both cases I used a drill bit, about half the diameter of the object to roll the cardboard (actually for the guns I used typing paper because they are quite small) on an old mouse pad. The card quickly takes up the curvature but you need to use a bit more pressure on the mating edges as the edges donít take the curve so readily. You can add the taper by just rolling the drill bit in an arc. Glue a joining strip, pre rolled as well, on one edge of the funnel, then finish by glueing it shut. Hope this helps!

Make the holes (top and bottom), roll some scrap paper together and put it through it in a way that it touches the holes, mark the perimeter of the holes with a pen, pull the paper out, cut it open / flatten it and you have the shape.
