Red face What PDF file reader?

Currently I use Adobe Acrobat X on an old Windows XP desktop computer. This set up works perfectly, but the old XP machine is obsolete so that it can no longer access the internet. Acrobat X does everything I want from a PDF reader, but it is no longer supported by Adobe. Eventually, I suppose, my XP machine will die and take with it my Acrobat X. That will be a sad day.

My other desktop computer is a Windows 10 machine, the tiny MiniSform, which is great for my needs. Unfortunately, Adobe's current free version of Acrobat is quite limited in terms of printer control features (my printer is an Epson WF-3640). Also unfortunate is Adobe's decision to make its more featured PDF readers available only by a rather expensive monthly subscription.

I'm willing to pay a reasonable amount for a good PDF reader program for my Windows 10 computer. Any suggesgions?

Not sure what limits your acrobat reader has. I am running Acrobat Reader DC, and I can manage my printer, print scale, etc from within it's print function.

Foxit PDF reader might be another option.

I use Fox-it Reader, and have been for years.

I would look at updating the print drivers for your printer, there are times where versions might unintentionally limit functions, and an update might solve that.

Thanks for the quick replies, Ray and Rick. My issue with Acrobat DC is that it does not give options to choose paper source, i.e., the printer rear feed slot, and it doesn't provide the option to choose cardstock weight paper. Also, Acrobat DC does not provide options for image co!or management, such as color brightness, density, and hue. Acrobat DC also lacks other controls that I have with Acrobat X.

I wasn't certain if the issue lies with Acrobat DC or with the Epson printer driver, so I updated the driver, but that didn't help, so I'm thinking it is the DC version of Acrobat.

I'm going to look into the PDF file reader you suggest, Rick.

The new Reader is a cloud based thing I believe.
I don't like it.

I still run Acrobat Pro 9, because I own it (on disc).
Been using it since XP days.
It works fine on Win 7 and now on Win 10.
(I've been on Win 10 for a year now)

Why your old Win XP can't access the internet is beyond me.
It may not be able to use current Browsers,
but the original IE will still work (if you can't find an older version of Firefox or ?)

Regardless, your system is probably too old to run Win 10 ...or Win 7 either(which stills works fine, don't listen to the rumors, it just isn't updated any more)
so you may be forced into a new system.

I was finally forced to move on to Win10 because of new games I wished to play (that only operate within Win10) otherwise I'd still be running Win7!

If you get a new system that will handle Win 10, then you're all set for the next 10 years.
And, if you have Acrobat 10, install it...it will work just fine.

Correct, XP's obsolescence doesn't prevent it from net access. Perhaps the OP meant XP has so many security issues which won't ever be addressed, it's too risky connecting it?
For Windows machines, I agree on Foxit.

When I attempt to log on tbe internet whether using Internet Explorer or Google Chrome, a window pops up that says the computer's clock isn't set to internet time, therefore log-on fails. The computer clock seems to be right. To be sure, I attempted to reset the clock (a pop up window with "press here to reset to internet time"), which didn't help.

Update: after a few attempts, I did get my XP's clock to sync with internet time. Internet Explorer works fine (I'm typing this on the old XP machine now). Chrome continues to insist the clock is off. No biggie... BTW, I'm moving away from Chrome on my devices, anyway.

haha I've seen that on certain websites and downloads.
Its often a malware thing.
It also comes up with unlicensed software...like a non-legit copy of Win7.
Are you sure your version is not pirated?

With Win 7 you should install Firefox browser, AdblockPlus extension, and a proper anti-malware software (like malwarebytes).
All these things are free, but you'll have to hunt down much older versions that are compatible with 32bit or 64bit Win XP.

Or, do yourself a favour, and wipe the harddrive, and install Win 7.
You can buy old copies of Win7 with proper serial numbers.
(Unfortunately they aren't cheap for legit copies...at least $50)

...I have one for sale right now, but theres just not enough interest in Win7 any more.
Win7Prem

BUT... it still sounds like your system needs to be updated first.
Step up to newer parts and run Win7 easily (with less headaches).

Once you have Win 7 in place, you can easily upgrade for free to Win10.

But then again, if you are going to do all that, you might consider investing the upgrade costs in a newer machine that is already running on Win10.
Even a used machine will bring you up to speed.

I picked up a nice HP machine the other day (for my TV)
with an Intel i7 processor, 4gb ram, etc. for $65.
It easily upgraded to Win10 when I got it home.

But back to your original question, you can continue to use Acrobat 10 on a newer setup.

.....................
Win7 Time set:
Set the system clock manually:
Go to Start > Windows Settings.
Select Time & Language.
Select Date & Time tab.
Set the Time automatic: On.
Set the Time zone automatic: On.

I have a Windows 10 desktop that I use occasionally. The thing about the XP OS is that it runs old software that I use a lot, i.e., Adobe PhotoDeluxe, an amazing photo editor, but not only photos....I used it today to rescale FG's Cessna 152 model to 1/100. The scaled down image is just as sharp as the original. PhotoDeluxe is no longer available, unfortunately. I suppose there are other similar programs available that will run on newer machines, but there is a steep learning curve to most programs like this if a person wants to get the most out of them. BTW, I got this Dell XP off Amazon for $50 a few years ago. I bought a used monitor for $10!

One of the reasons I took so long to upgrade from Win 7
was a worry about many old softwares...
but I was assured all will work...and they did.

And I have many older programs from my XP days
and they are still running okay on Win10.

The learning process for similar programs (to your older ones) is not as difficult as you think.
There are many simple ways to do things like rescale a model.

If you already have a win10 pc, then why not try to install some of the programs you are used to, on it?
Then you can see if they work or not.

Adobe Photodeluxe is a Photo Transfer and Editing software, probably came with an old camera.
It was bundled with Olympus cameras.
This type of software is pretty common, and so is this type of editing.
You can do the same stuff with built in Windows Paint.
You can get an old copy here: Adobe PhotoDeluxe : Adobe : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive
