X-Planes to Paper Model

Can anyone tell me how, or is it even possible, to convert a 3D X-Plane digital model into a digital paper model via any kind of software? If it can be done, it would be worth getting a copy of X-Planes and some of their designs.

Interesting idea, but if it would be possible at all, wouldn't there be some copyright on that stuff?

X-Plane to Model

Oh, they are copyrighted, but once you purchase one of their 3D digital models, there should be no problem using the data to create a model for your own use. You probably couldn't legally share it though, without permission.

X-Plane EULA is really REALLY specific about what you cannot do with the software. You can however make whatever you want for you own purposes, that is your inherit right, (unless it is a nuclear bomb, or weapon, then of course you have to register with the proper authority or face sanctions.) Obviously someone could not make something that would put society in danger (like a Warp Core) or something like that.

My thought was to use the section views in Planemaker as a basis for designing planes in Rhino. I just have to get a PC that can run Planemaker.

Rhino is way easier to use than Planemaker, which I thought, IMHO, was one of the most unintuitive programs I have come across. I have the latest X-Plane and could not believe what a let down Planemaker was. I guess the only good thing about it is that when you finish the plane you can fly it in X-Plane.

Depending on what you are doing converting X-plane files might not be the best approach. If you are going for super accurate models then probably not the best idea, just one example is that the airfoils aren't always accuratedly represented.

However a lot of the X-Plane files I know of have Blender created skins so if you find one of those then you might have more luck. I tried Blender (free download that even has an unroll feature) but it was so different from Rhino that I never bothered to learn it and can't comment on how well it works.
